I have been working at Duke University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Easy to reach out to a professor and ask whether he/she needs a research assistant - most professors are currently conducting research. Great opportunity to work with experienced, well-respected professors. Good first job to put on your resume.

    Cons

Whether the work is interesting depends on the needs of the professor - at times, work may be data entry. Salary depends on whether the professor has grant money for research.

I have been working at Duke University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Office is filled with great people -- everyone is so much fun. Despite doing administrative tasks, there are plenty of jokes from faculty and staff, and it's a very supportive environment where everyone takes an interest in what you're doing. Lots of opportunity for promotion, and there is always free food and drink!

    Cons

Sometimes can get a little tedious with the administrative work.

I worked at Duke University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Duke provided pretty good facility to nurture young researchers. In general, Duke administration is wonderful to work with. Whenever in need, they will extend their helping hand to you.

    Cons

There is no significant complain about Duke. Although, Duke being located in north Durham, there is not much thing to do outside of the campus. In some region, safety is a big issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Duke University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits are great. The postdoctoral association at Duke has provided many seminars and workshops to allow you to improve skills necessary to advance to a permanent job.

    Cons

Parking is in short supply near the research buildings. As a postdoc at a Heavy R01 university like Duke you are expected to put in long hours and there can be significant sacrifices needed in your family/personal life.
