    Pros

It's a great university with a multitude of opportunities, good compensation, and plenty of opportunities for advancement, professional and otherwise. You learn new things everyday which is something to look forward to. The pay is better than other Durham employers, and the benefits are as well. Yet people will still complain about it. I should not speak for everyone though since I only represent a tiny fraction of the overall employee body.

    Cons

Sometimes you encounter rude people, but that's what you should expect anywhere. In general the culture is very professional and academic. Typical research university culture.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Loved working as a Research Assistant at Duke. Great way to build your network/ learn some valuable skills for on the job.

    Cons

Working even part-time can be a challenge when enrolled as a full-time student.

    Advice to Management

    Fabulous experience. No complaints here.

    Pros

There are excellent research opportunities and first class medical center with state of the art equipment and facilities for your use

    Cons

Parking is difficult, permits are expensive, lots are often distant from your office, proximate lots require going on a waitlist for several years

    Advice to Management

I would recommend that the leadership develop more interdisciplinary opportunities or more options for joint degree programs so that graduate students have a broader educational experience

    Pros

Good support and community that is fairly open to change. Excellent knowledge sharing between units. Great benefits beyond compensation. Great place to live.

    Cons

Parking. Salaries are low (case in all of higher ed), but better than most institutions. Top tier management seems a little out of touch with some functional concerns. However they do a good job of implementing their big picture ideas.

    Advice to Management

Breeak the mold for education and offer competitive salaries. This will attract and maintain much better talent. Enable mechanisms where not just lower level concerns are fielded, but also ideas for organizational success.

  6. It's a wonderful place to work

    Pros

Respected institution, great environment, lots of collaboration and funding. Having a hospital as part of the campus is really useful for collaborations and research.

    Cons

Parking isn't great, health benefits could be better, they have no idea how to deal with ice and snow in the winter, and there is sometimes crime near campus

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, but remember to make the salaries competitive for the little people as well as the big sharks.

    Pros

The work atmosphere is great, they don't burn out their graduate students. The stipend is probably the best in the country with regards to cost of living in Durham.

    Cons

Some departments may be small and thus not have a lot of colleagues who are working on the same material as you.

    Pros

Very good research environment in Biomedical field.

    Cons

Nothing. Only the thing I could feel of is relatively lower chances of growth for PhDs compared to MDs.

    Pros

Duke has very good acacemic reputation in the nation. There are plenty of resources available and you will be working with / learning from smart people.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure in getting things done. Everyone pushes very hard. You need to really well to survive in the competitive environment. Another disadvantage is that Duke is not close to big cities.

    Advice to Management

need to communicate more with employees. Need to find out why the national ranking is not as good as several years ago and figure out the plan to maintain Duke's excellence as a top 10 school.
