    Pros

Really cannot beat the benefits. When I left, I had about 500 hours of sick time accumulated. If you only cover yourself, the health benefits are basically free. if you live in Durham, the location is pretty much ideal.

    Cons

Benefits are great; salary is not unless you are upper management (like Director level or right below). It seems like when people leave from a department, they do not immediate replace those individuals and tend to redistribute the work amongst the remaining employees which can cause some employees to be overwhelmed with work which decreases employee morale.

    Advice to Management

Address the human capital issue and do not expect employees to have to go above and beyond without proper recognition and/or compensation. "Other duties as assigned" should not be used in an abusive manner.

  2. Durham County Government is a progressive company.

I have been working at Durham County

    Pros

Great benefits. Stable. Retirement and health plans top-notch.

    Cons

The Board of County Commissioners are more about themselves versus the people. Need new blood.

    Advice to Management

Encourage mentorship, succession planning that is valued and effective.

    Pros

The benefit package is good with a matching 401k and LGEERS program.
You are given a choice of 3 levels of coverage for insurance.

    Cons

Very difficult to get things accomplished because of the different levels politics involved.
Some employees have become very complacent and are satisfied with how things are just because that's "how it's always been."
Pay freeze that has been in effect for several years (except for County Manager who recently gave himself a raise)
Advancement is all about "who you know" and if you are willing to play the political game.

    Advice to Management

Take the ideas and thoughts of your employees into consideration.
Work harder at developing work plans and advancement paths for employees. Every department/role should have a career path.

I have been working at Durham County

    Pros

Good people working hard for the citizens of Durham County. Good benefits. Solid financial footing. Unlikely to be laid off.

    Cons

The organization is stagnant and doesn't learn from its mistakes. Like many government organizations, it's too bureaucratized. There's too much activity and not enough output.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to reflect on decisions that are being made so that the same mistakes aren't repeated time after time. Focus on fixing the systemic issues instead of firing a cog.
