Former Employee – worked at E. W. Scripps full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I worked at the Naples Daily News, and was given near-full autonomy to do what I wanted as far as coverage within my beat, which was essentially local sports coverage. I was encouraged to be creative, and was given every opportunity to do things I felt passionate about. I was given some pretty good tools to do my job, but they were mostly leftovers from my predecessors, who were given a big budget during a time when the paper was doing much better financially.
For the most part, I liked my co-workers, and feel like I developed professionally and personally during my time there. The actual Naples Daily News facility is state-of-the-art, and you won't find too many newspapers these days with the building and equipment that NDN has.
Cons – - Reductions in pay, mediocre benefits, FROZEN benefits.
- Working with editors was sometimes a hit-or-miss sort of feeling. Higher-ups can be a little out of touch with the workflow of a current journalist.
- Your success is tied to the overall success of Scripps as a whole, not just the individual success of the paper that you work for, which leads to some frustrating limitations.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at E. W. Scripps full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Most of the workforce is composed of good people, good working environment and professionalism overall. Corporate policy seems to be enlightened but when you meet the corporate faces, it's obvious they're there for the big salaries and lack conviction to the same principals they hold their workforce to.
Cons – Very top heavy pay. Corporate rakes in wealth while the minions continue to slave in order to keep those at the top wealthy (including the Scripps family). Pitiful health insurance, no pension, but they always dangle the possibility of things getting better in front of you. Four years without a raise yet the CEO makes several million dollars a year. Really?
Nothing but change. While change can often be good, it has gotten in the way of producing a good product and has become so tiresome I'm looking elsewhere. It's just constant disruption after disruption without focus from the top or the bottom. We're all left fighting for our jobs and fighting for any scraps that may be thrown down by corporate.
Advice to Senior Management – You cannot cut your way to success. Staffing levels are not anywhere near where they should be and neither is compensation. I personally am making less as a manager than I was as a reporter once you figure in loss of certain compensation and loss of overtime. You're loosing good people or have burned them out due to the often exhaustive workload and lack of creative input.

Pros – Flexible Work Schedule and Environment (can work remote when need to).
Cons – Corporate office, not a lot of transparency on processes/planning. Salary expectations.

Pros – Benefits, medium-sized salaries, good working environment, friendly co-workers.
Cons – Our department wasn't allowed to attend all meetings which in my opinion, were imperative. Policies were well defined through online training however, changed from time to time within our local station (unwritten) and were not well-defined on a local level, mostly regarding PTO and how it was supposed to be used. It was defined one way in the company-wide meeting and seminar but then changed later, too late for some of us in our department causing unjust 'warning' letters about our attendance. Also, those in our local station could not move up or move into different departments due to Scripps bringing in their 'own' people, after our station being bought. Little or no opportunities for advancement.

Pros – Good company to work for as a journalist, as newspaper companies go. They do want to do good work and will let you and encourage you to do so, although much depends on the particular place you're at.
Cons – They will work you like a dog if you let them. Had multiple editors who thought that unpaid overtime was owed to the paper habitually, out of love of the profession, and questioning that was disloyal. I did it for a while and then stood my ground and I'm glad I did, or I would have been miserable -- and never able to do anything good.
Advice to Senior Management – Read the story of the goose that laid the golden egg. It's not complicated.

Former Employee – worked at E. W. Scripps as a contractor for more than a year
Pros – They pay on time and without too much of a hitch
Cons – They pay very little on time without too much of a hitch. Even though you may be perfectly acceptable to work for them as a 1099 contractor, getting a full time position is entirely another matter altogether. It's almost as if you don't exist even though you are already posting news articles for them as a freelance contractor.
Advice to Senior Management – I don't have any advice that would be seriously taken into account. However, when you buy cheap labor, you get cheap labor.

Pros – 3 wks vacation to start with, easy commute
Cons – most incompetent people was promoted
HR tried to get tough without understanding the issue at hand between subordinate and supervisor.
Low moral since many people are leaving

Pros – Flexible hours when needed, great employees, friendly staff, management knows everyone by first name.alot of social events to keep employee moral going.
Cons – Cutbacks in base salary, change commission structure frequently.

Pros – To the extent you can get any newspaper job, it's a good day. The database editor in Washington is a real pro.
Cons – The company cares about the Food Network and other cable TV shows, not the newspapers. They shut down the only one that was really top notch, The Rocky Mountain News.
Advice to Senior Management – Sell your newspapers to someone who cares about quality journalism if such a buyer exists.
