    I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good starting salary & benefits

    Cons

No structured on-boarding and training program, new employees are given an overloaded plateful of assignments that are added to virtually every week if not daily. They preach job/life balance but expect 24/7 if that's what it takes! Poor management that doesn't do their job then throws others under the bus to pass blame. I witnessed and was a victim of what can only be described as age discrimination - after 2008 great recession the then current manager of our department (as all others) was given a mandate to cut costs, did all we could operationally but it wasn't enough and he was too good of a man to do what was wanted to senior staff. He was removed and retired and a younger manager with no ties (or heart) came in and over next 18 months removed 8 of 12 salaried department positions, replacing a couple with younger people who were paid much less.

I understand this is business, but the way it was done was terrible. Senior salaried members with 25, 30 & 40 years of loyal service with no blemishes on their records were suddenly told they had unacceptable defects in their performance reviews and were basically shown the door with the choice of taking early retirement/quitting with their integrity intact or being fired on some trumped up unacceptable performance charge! Noticeably, every one was over 50 years of age, which meant they had the most tenure and highest salaries. Several were planning on retiring soon until the great depression lost half of their retirement income and hoped to work long enough to regain it. This was also done to senior salaried personnel in wine making, HR and others. A number of newer/younger employees who one would think would make it to top management abruptly quit, why invest your career in a company who treats other so callously. It's either walk in lockstep like a soulless robot or not being true to yourself. Unequivocally the worst job experience I've had in 40 years of employment. I even heard that many Gallo folks have left to go work for their competitors in the area and the people there have heard all this and more and those that get a job say it's like a different world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going to have pep rallys and post huge banners and stickers all over the campus claiming 'We're All Family', then you need to understand that most people don't treat their families the way the Gallo's do!

    Pros

The private (family) ownership allows management to invest in company and employees and maintain strategic long-term view. Met and learned from a lot of great people. Good sense of teamwork and rewarding work. Employees can chart a path through a variety of opportunities and learn a lot about the company while picking up valuable skills. Employees can take pride in the great portfolio of extremely successful products that friends and family enjoy.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be tricky in roles relating to operations, due in large part to seasonal nature of the business. Managers seem to understand this though and company rewards employees for their efforts and celebrates successes with employees.

Freedom to run your own portfolio of accounts. Good opportunity to get outside sales experience.
