Great place to work, but you have to drink the "wine"

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic opportunities to train cross-functionally, but don't expect to come from the outside and join the club. The dues to pay are high, the hours long and the fraternity is quite tight. They will value your outsider expertise but you will be trumped by dullwits who grew up with the family and have "do you remember when..." stories. Generally, people you work with are smart and passionate...

    Cons

Drink the "wine" (kool-aide) in order to move up...you must live in Modesto, and you must have weekend things to do with the "work family" in order to be clued in for Monday. Lots of inside talk and chatty chatty, especially by those trying to impress VPs and GMs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull apart the wool from your eyes every once in a while...recognize those who add value but aren't of the "clan", and beware of those who use loyalty to manipulate you...focus on performance, competencies, skills and output...not just home address.

    Pros

As a family-owned company, there are less layers and you can be recognized and rewarded for hard work and good results. They provide a good benefits package.

    Cons

As with all companies nowadays, the mantra is "do more with less". There are a lot of people working harder than ever, without the help they need.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at whether your current business environment is sustainable long-term.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The office atmosphere is energetic and upbeat. A profitable company brings good compensation and the motto is work hard play hard.

    Cons

Because of understaffing due to restricted growth of organization and the constant movement of employees in and out of distributers, the employees seem to work 80 plus hours and not taking all of their vacation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend the money and create additional positions.

    Pros

Great people, values employees, lots of access to wine

    Cons

Slow at times, Management very resistant to change

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You will receive the best talent if you can figure out a great way to allow people to live in the Bay Area and still work in Modesto.

    Pros

Free two cases of wine every month. Very tight knit community of employees. Privately held company. Strong and effective management team. Union environment that works the way it is supposed to.

    Cons

We did 50% of our business 4th quarter. "Merry Christmas" takes on a whole new meaning. Strongly managed company means you hade better produce A++ results 100% of the time .. is that really such a bad thing ?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rest in Peace Ernest and Julio.

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time

    Pros

Great people who are like-minded, fun and motivated. Promotion is from within, so work hard and you will go places!

    Cons

Long hours but worth it in the long run. Some parts of the job are not ideal but it is entry level, which is expected in most entry level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are going

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Of all of the largest alcohol producers, E&J Gallo is one of the last that is Family Owned. This is one of the things that the company takes pride in and in my experience they treat all of the employees like they are family.

    Cons

I think one of the major cons is that if you want to move up in the company to the highest reaches, you have to spend some time working in Modesto, California. This is one of the worst places in the country to live or visit.
