I have been working at ECC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people...many who have been there for 20+ years
Many clients who are with the firm for 25 years
30 years in business and 28 profitable years with much of the profit has been passed to the Employee Owners in the form of compensation and stock
    Great Culture of Employee Ownership
Lots of authority and responsibility delegated to individuals
Core values are still at the "Core" though the values have always been challenged in times of success and challenge
Very low turnover in leadership...the people who built the company are mostly still there and still a relatively young
    Company
ECC had the financial strength to weather a couple of tough and lean years, thanks to its people and clients

    Cons

A few projects had dramatic losses in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan which impacted everyone
The company implemented a tougher level of management discipline
Despite the friendly and collaborative culture the tough times call for tough decisions which are often unpopular
Most work is for the US Government who has been slow to compensate on claims for the losses above
The work has always been project based and every project finishes and then you move on to another location
The business has had very high and low earnings which are not consistent
US Government funding is much more restricted which drives many of the challenges

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication with the Employees will help them engage and deliver better results
Get back to the basics which used to form the basis of everything good about ECC
Too many managers which are still there as the company has right sized itself in other ways
The world has changed so change with it and don't worry so much about making everyone happy
Ensure that your leadership team has the heart to communicate all the news, good and bad

I have been working at ECC full-time

    Pros

Fully paid personal and dependent health care, good benefits generally; good people and relaxed culture; good infrastructure and established procedures; company has been in business for 2 decades +, good overall reputation with clients and industry. Past 1-2 years could have been better but there are good opportunities for recovery and growth.

    Cons

Currently going through a tough time; changes on client side have also had some impacts on the company. More turnover than is desirable (by employees or management), working to cut costs and stay competitive in a tough environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to stay focused on performance (and consequently, reputation). As the current year has been tough, go the extra mile to ensure people know their efforts are appreciated.

How long is it going to take ECC to figure this stuff out?

    I worked at ECC

    Pros

As almost everyone has mentioned the health insurance at ECC is outstanding. Company paid with a very low deductible. The majority of the people that still remain with the company are friendly, hardworking (they have to be due to the layoffs) and abnormally, optimistically, beyond all reason, patient.

    Cons

For 20 years ECC was a company with no debt who was growing and expanding. Then almost 3 years ago came the reckoning day. The "ECC Way" no longer worked and huge losses resulted. ECC has always paid slightly below the industry standard but touted their outstanding bonuses. These bonuses disappeared 2 years ago which left everyone with just below industry pay. Every quarter the dog and pony bigwig show would trot out and tell employees that everything had been figured out and things were looking up....except not so much. Between layoffs and talented people figuring out they could find better pay and stability elsewhere the company is bleeding talent. Those employees left are doing the job of 2 or 3 people with no increase in pay. Benefits are being cut while money is being spent on nonsensical things that make no difference to 95% of the employee population.

Layoffs are starting again to try to get overhead under control. Instead of the layoffs starting at the top with the "fat" the current policy seems to be to lay off the lower end employees and call it progress toward the goal. Favoritism is shown towards cuts made with little or no overview of who is carrying the increased load and who is friends with the VP's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's time to wake up and smell with smoke of the company burning down around your ears while you fiddle and say things are improving. Your money saving cuts aren't working because they start from the bottom up and not the top down. Part of your cuts were to get rid of 95% of the women in the company who had any power. This makes ECC completely behind industry standards and unattractive on several levels. Start rewarding people who work hard towards the goal of saving the company and stop holding on to people because of who they know.

I have been working at ECC

    Pros

Winderful staff and such commitment to doing their work under really tough circumstances. Undervalued by SR Mgmt sadly. Benefits still very good.

    Cons

See the initial comments. What started out 26 years ago as an amazing company has become what it is now. Paul is a truly caring good man. Manjiv not so much.

I worked at ECC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

100% paid health insurance. Some employees/departments enjoy flexibility in their work hours and ability to work from home. Healthy snacks provided.

    Cons

At one time was a great place to work, but grew too fast. Due to major project losses mostly in international construction, there has been no profit and large loss for several years, resulting in increased turnover, top performers leaving, poorly managed layoffs, and cuts in benefits. Budgets, wellness program, and incentive bonuses slashed. Career development nonexistent. Poor communication and leadership adds to lack of trust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Never underestimate the value of dedicated employees - too easily taken for granted and lost, but so difficult to replace.

I worked at ECC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The health insurance is fully paid for and is really top notch. Non management types were good to work with. There was good flexibility to take care of family matters if necessary.

    Cons

Being a man, I'm not usually in tune with gender bias issues. But there is no effort on the part of ECC to promote or hire women into management. Several of the managers at ECC are ex military brass and their general contempt and disregard for women in management is obvious.

The organization at ECC is top heavy with vice presidents and program manager that don't do anything to justify their jobs. In fact, poor performance (such as losing millions upon millions of dollars on poorly run projects) on the part of managers is not punished by these individuals losing their jobs.

There is a definite old boys club feel at ECC, with an insular core group that has no idea of what kind of problems are going on in their organization. If you bring up issues or point out problems, you are generally not long for the job.

There is little to know communication or coordination between the different offices to find the right staff or numbers of staff to plan and execute projects.

There is almost no emphasis on quality assurance in either their vertical construction or environmental projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop protecting your inner circle, get out to your offices and see what the heck is going wrong with the company.

I have been working at ECC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good colleagues. Flexible schedule. Lots of opportunity to expand skills. 100% paid health insurance for salaried employees and their families. Ethical values. You won't go hungry.

    Cons

Terrible work life balance - low glass ceiling for pay and title but not for responsibilities and expectations. Some managerial roles filled by people with no social skills. Unequal access to recognition and pay. Frat boy culture is only good for frat boys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the double and triple promotions high performing female employees are getting when they leave - based on the work they were doing for ECC.

    Pros

Great people! Most of the folks are good at what they do and quality people overall. The benefits are fantastic. Worldwide opportunities.

    Cons

Salaries are slightly below market. IT is not valued by upper management. There is a definite lack of project controls, which has lead to project spinning out.
