Overall they are a good company to work for

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at EDF Energy

ProsWith the recession EDF still offered employees annual bonuses and cost of living increases even though times are tough. It can also care about its staff but sometimes this is mainly due to the fact that you know someone with power.

ConsThere is no true recognition of talent in the company and they doesn't understand the needs of the customer or what needs to change in order to move forward

Advice to Senior ManagementEnsure that people with skills get a chance to progress. Try doing compliance requirements simpler

Slow moving company. Poor culture. Dissapointing.

Senior Business Analyst (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at EDF Energy full-time for more than a year

ProsEDF Energy is a great name in the energy landscape.
Energy generation is a big challenge and utilities are the place to be if you want to be part of the journey.
There is so much to do in terms of technology, communication, processes, partnerships, marketing
EDF Energy comes with the brand, expertise and all the assets from the French giant, parent company EDF.

ConsUnfortunately, the strategy is not so clear (energy generation vs retail)
EDF Energy was build after a merger of multiple UK energy companies (Britis energy, london electricity, etc.) and there are still cultural gaps.
People are not likely to welcome new comers and are very process-driven.
Tick-boxing culture, few inspirational managers.
Lots of contractor, people focused on their day to day task.
EDF Energy puts too much emphasis on greenwashing and low carbon blabla.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees a clear strategy and pay attention to clients.
Not just copy-paste global marketing (ie greenwashing) but help people understand the A-Z of energy, for today and tomorrow.

Nice Job ruined by the Management

Meter Operative (Current Employee)
Eastbourne, England (UK)

I have been working at EDF Energy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsEnjoy working with the Public. Sort of being your own boss, nobody looking over your shoulder. Being out and about

ConsWorking with a Management that is intimidating, threatening. that have manage to demoralise the Work Force. Driving a van that has been rebranded with the most stupid of any logos that has been produced by a Company

Advice to Senior ManagementStop using a stick and more of a carrot, to get the best out of us. Your bullying tactics, only make us more resentfull. Try trusting us more, and stop treating us like Children

Nice place to work

Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at EDF Energy full-time for less than a year

ProsIt's a place that offers strong possibilities of progression within the company. From the moment you start that becomes apparent, where most of the high up positions are filled with people who have worked there from graduation, or school.
Pays very well.

ConsBecomes a bubble, which many don't want to break out of, but also will not give you the experience required to get the same pay in the outside world.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer more opportunities to choose a path for people's careers. Placing people is not a good way to keep them in the company.

Safe nut boring job, no aspirations or future prospects. Impossible to develop within the company.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at EDF Energy full-time for more than a year

ProsThere are some very skilled engineers working at Barnwood, very technical and very friendly. Despite all the work distractions and being surrounded by incompetent contractors/ glorified PAs and other non technical roles, they do work hard and know what they're doing.

ConsDepressing atmosphere and workplace, too many glorified PAs,, HR were useless and a nightmare,
management constantly over engineers.
No ambition.
Located in the outskirts of Gloucester, nothing to do on week days or weekends.
If you are a graduate avoid this place.

Work as a research engineer at edf

Research Engineer (Former Employee)
Paris (France)

I worked at EDF Energy full-time for more than a year

ProsAllows a good balance between work and life, especially for people with families. Good benefits, including renting a car, shopping on site, etc. There are also opportunities for independent work and project management. They are also involved in research, so, depending on the team, you can go to the top conferences in the field.

ConsToo much management. The administrative formalities take too long to be solved.

Year In Industry Placement +Sponsorship

Placement Student (Current Employee)
Gloucester, England (UK)

I have been working at EDF Energy as an intern for more than a year

ProsSponsorship, Large number of collegues in placements, good team dynamics.

ConsThe work given was much worse than many of employees similar to my experience, HR system is useless, Given to little to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you are to have placement students, use them, they can do things. Dont treat them as permenant employees through HR

Good money, good job security - but not a career

Retentions Agent (Former Employee)
Worthing, South East England, England (UK)

I worked at EDF Energy full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood salary and commission, incentives and a lot of opportunity for overtime. Safe and secure lifestyle, unless you're caught doing something wrong (there are lots of rules)

ConsHigh school style discipline, anal management, over-the-top processes and regulations. Can you see yourself sitting on a phone until you're 60?

Advice to Senior ManagementRelax.
