Pros
Good company overall, cool technology and industry leader, the Quarterly Review company-wide meetings are really motivating.
Cons
Even though there's training opportunities, (EMC University) no one really cares about your career development. You can try and develop yourself, but overall you will be treated as totally expendable, no matter what sort of expert you are. They don't care about their people. Also, good luck moving into management - close to impossible. In marketing - not much to learn and not much creativity and real results - mostly everything is done by an expensive agency.
Advice to Senior Management
Allow feedback from the bottom up, trust your people and let them express themselves with ideas.
Pros
market leader
excellent benefits
some parts of the company are working on cool new technology
Cons
Environment overwhelmingly political. Competence no longer matters. Capable people pushed out of the way to make room for people who are well connected or who can talk a good game.
Petty. Little/no raises while new layers of VPs continue to be hired. Too much time spent focusing on nonsense - e.g. can't print in color without jumping through hoops.
Poor quality of managers at all levels. Many with no experience actually delivering a product. Senior leadership does not have ability to fix the problems they are currently facing
Advice to Senior Management
at this point, the leadership competence mess is so pervasive, entire layers of management need to go in order to turn things around
Pros
- Reasonable Salaries
- Reasonable Benefits
- Opportunities for broad variety of skill sets.
Cons
- Management must recognize the impact of randomly assigning people to work on unrelated projects especially during the re-org. They should care about what the individuals like or dislike. There is a lot of dead weight in this company. Unless this changes, the whole organization is at risk while new companies are trying to emerge and outpace EMC.
Pros
Passionate people, driven to suceed, and have a lot of fun along teh way
Cons
Very high paced and changing rapidly, very positive for teh right person, very challenging for others
Pros
Their training program that you take as a sales associatie is phenominal. You will be a 10 times better salesperson than before you started after the training.
There are tons of resources within inside sales for you to develop and understand the business.
Opportunity for growth in Inside Sales organization and getting promoted from sales assocaite to inside sales role to management if you want.
Great Industry with lots of money to be made.
Cons
Average Pay at BEST. They make it seem like it's incredibly high pay but your numbers to hit are always right about the best you can get.
You see to get stuck in Inside Sales Role. You interview and try to get to the field and it seems like it then becomes political for who goes to the field.
Management can be very loyal at times but then also not. They will be your biggest champion but when you want something they don't support they find a way to sabotage it.
Advice to Senior Management
Promote the people from the inside to the field first before hiring randoms in the field. Pay should be hire within the inside sales role. It's tough enough to sell over the phone, let alone high end products that EMC sells for thousands of dollars.
Pros
Financially strong company with great products and people
Cons
Large company, sometimes hard to move up.
Pros
IF you work for a good manager they will support and back you, Work life balance was great.
Cons
Working across departments is a battlefield. A lot of back stabbing and deceit. Taking credit for others work. Get blamed if a golden child makes a bad decision or huge mistake. Don't think about defending yourself if you are the chosen fall guy because they will make your life miserable and damage your professional reputation. Incompetence is rampant. Some departments have no work life balance yet others are taking naps and steeling from the company. Un educated incompetent people in management roles because they know some one. Illegal activities are covered up. Retaliation is allowed and HR protects the wrong people in their effort to save their own job. Shall I go on?????
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of the hard working honest employees and get rid of the trash. Only hire and promote employees who are educated and have the experience for the job. Throw out the olds boys network. Company desperately needs a culture change.
Pros
If you are just out of school or early in your career. This place is one of the best to learn from some of the most knowledgeable people in their respective fields. The education potential is great. Company is on a constant new learning cycle.
Cons
The very top management gets a lot of free stock. Not too much makes it to the workers. Certain organization get more than their share of option, while others get very few.
Low raises in good times.
Advice to Senior Management
First go meet the employees – announces. No show and tell, no preparation. See what the average employee is doing. Everyone I have met at EMC puts in equal amounts of work to make EMC successful. Why not have an equal distribution of the free stock or normal stock options to all.
Pros
My direct manager is amazing
work life balance is good
many education opportunities
co-workers are great, they create a rich environment of support and nourish growth
Cons
some process inefficiency which is expected with a company of this size
Pros
Two paid vacation days
Decent pay
Excellent Social Events (I got taken to the Red Sox Luxury Box)
Taken very seriously
Some folks really know their stuff
Cons
Sometimes stereotypical intern work
Not all people the brightest bulbs
Not much by way of mentoring
Poor climate control in the building
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work
Hire more outside of the MA region
