Pros
Good compensation; pockets of good leadership
Cons
Burn out. Intense politics which tended to get in the way of getting any meaningful work done.
Advice to Senior Management
Even Jack Welch did not really get rid of the "bottom 10%" each year. That was a myth.
Pros
The employees at EMC make it a great place to work. Their positive attitudes, good humor, excellent skills and focus are superior.
Cons
Management sees employees as easily replacable.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees like they are deserving members of a unique community. Offer to support them when things change for the better of worse in terms of the company's performance.
Pros
- Opportunity to growth
- Diversity
- Opportunity to work with different functional teams
Cons
- Balance between personal and professional life is bad
- Compensation does not change at the same pace as the competitors
- Senior Management does not have the ability to motivate employees
Advice to Senior Management
EMC has put in place many projects in the past and today. There is a cost/benefit evaluation PRIOR to the project but I've never seen any evaluation AFTER the project. Senior Management is rarely hold accountable for their mistakes and keep moving from job to job. There is no commitment with quality ike in the past.
Pros
If you like a fast paced environment, then this is the place for you. However it doesn't let down, it is relentless so you are unlikely to get a breather. Most benefits are pretty good. I believe success is usually noticed and rewarded.
Cons
Sales driven culture makes for a frat boy atmosphere. As above, pace is not only fast, it's relentless. A lot of people can't take it. Acquisition target so long term job security is an issue. Not a good thing as they are the only big player left in Mass. Vacation allowance is lousy for a tech company and could be improved.
Advice to Senior Management
Doing a good job. Can't fault management on the strategic course and business growth.
Pros
good training, good place to start off your career.
Cons
tough place to work over long term
Advice to Senior Management
be more fair across the board
Pros
Big company with many areas for advancement. Good benefits, health insurance, day care 401K matching and big name recognition
Cons
High pressure in all departments
Advice to Senior Management
mid-year job reviews instead of yearly
Pros
EMC is a very employee friendly company where you are treated with utmost respect. It has a very flat hierarchy where everyone are treated the same.People are very friendly and a very healthy work culture is followed.
Cons
Since the company is large it is very difficult to get noticed. You shoudl be open to work on anything your manager asks you to work on.
Advice to Senior Management
I am too inexperienced to offer an advice as of now
Pros
- Good benefits package
- Plenty of smart, intelligent people to learn from
- Support for career advancement such as professional certification and higher education
- Oppurtunity for lateral movement
- Company values hard work and dedication
Cons
- Work/life balance is not healthy here - I guess some people just REALLY like what they're doing. I'm not there yet.
- More times than not, management is detatched from reality and not in tune with what some of the individual contributors and 1st-level managers are working on.
- 401(k) match was recently suspended (June '09).
- Too much politics, favoritism, and bureaucracy.
- Certain groups have a stale career advancement environment, which thwarts employee morale and leads to high attrition.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to employees below you, or else they won't be there anymore. Actively seek their advice.
Pros
A great place to work, many good employees. Management was superb at this office. Many projects to have to complete.
Cons
There are absolutely no downsides to working at EMC. As noted before there are many Pros to this company, and zero cons.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing what you're doing, company is moving in the right direction. Future is looking extremely positive for it's employees.
Pros
Talented people
Competitive compensation and benefits
Job security better than at other equally large companies
Good work/life balance
Cons
Extremely hierarchical management (us vs them)
Innovation through acquisitions - not enough organic growth
Upward mobility difficult
Divisions very silo'd
Advice to Senior Management
Identify and incubate your in-house talent and you'll see tremendous rewards.
