I have been working at EMC

    Pros

People focused on technology. Always self-critical and willing to change and adapt to the rapidly evolving competitive landscape. Nice mix of growth, through acquisition and organic. Great benefits, outstanding even (parental leave, autism, adoption assistance - not just a run of the mill benefits package). #18 on the Global Great Places to Work list for 2014 and striving to improve. Walking the talk, not just marketing their way there. True focus on and belief in diversity and inclusion. Lots of smart people working hard.

    Cons

It's a big company! Scale can bring bureaucracy. Messaging can get blurry, especially when trying to get >70K employees to understand and embrace new and evolving strategies and tactics. Sr. Executive Leadership is a little too insulated from the rest of the population.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the Sr. level folks....Come on down to the cafeteria sometime! You'd be amazed what you can pick up in terms of organizational intelligence if you'd just ask a few questions of whoever is next to you in line when you make your salad!

    Pros

Supports self development including continuing education, certifications, and training. Flexibility in working from home. Has been rebranding itself with trying to appeal more to millennials.

    Cons

Large company, things move slow, yearly layoffs in engineering, many managers manage upwards. I am underpaid but overqualified.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benefits are generous. Many options

    Cons

Compensation is poor for anyone nontechnical below Director level. Resistance to change - old way of doing things has been around forever. They say they want to change but it is very slow coming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need new managers open to new ideas, real change. Need more flex time and work from home options.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent peers, great technology, overall fun job. Wonderful benefits

    Cons

Executive management driving the employees to death. Unrealistic deliverable schedules causes ZERO work/life balance. They mandate 24/7 coverage in the support positions. If you make it there long enough, they will do another reorg, change upper management, lay off great employees, and ramp up more staff in China. Pretty soon they will no longer need an office in Hopkinton! Everyone I know that still works there will stay until they are forced out. After working there for so long it becomes the devil that you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rehire some of the fantastic people you laid-off over the past 3 years!!!! You can not continue killing the remaining engineers and not bring in more staff!

    I worked at EMC

    Pros

EMC is a great company that is always reviewing where it is and where it is going. Lots of great technology being acquired and developed there. EMC learns from past mistakes and invest in new technologies quite well. There are really good people throughout the company.

    Cons

As with any large company there are some bad managers and some unnecessary departments even. Many manager s and some executive focus more on their own careers and less on their teams, Properly measuring success seems to be a bit of a challenge. More attention should be given to retaining good people. EMC looses a lot of good people due to poor managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep driving for more synergy between BU's. Do more to train managers, directors and yes VP's too. Make them accountable. Stop letting VP's waste a lot of money on their own unnecessary global chin digs, Put more emphasis on retaining good employees, and push HR and your recruiters to work to help people find better fit positions before they leave for something better. I've seen first time managers with no manager experience let go hardworking talented seasoned pro's.
