    I worked at EMC Insurance full-time

    Pros

    They train the employees, take care of them if they provide value, have great work-life balance, have a free on-site gym - really everything is great except the con.

    Cons

    The programming is done in an obscure top-down language called Mapper. It makes sense that they use it because it fits their needs and they have enough influence of it to prevent it from becoming obsolete.

    However, if you like new technology and OO programming, this isn't it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Was great while I was there.

    I worked at EMC Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Decent benefits and time off

    Cons

    Change in corporate direction has resulted in "chicken little" reactions on a branch level. This is not the company it use to be. They care nothing for their employees anymore.

     Work for this company if you are seeking:

    * No authority level or diminished at best
    * No opportunity for advancement
    * Micro management at its finest
    * Sex discrimination
    * Lack of management support
    * Being under paid compared to peer
      companies
    * Favoritism based on brown nosing ability
    * You seek not to be recognized for your
       industry knowledge
    * Your suggestions for improvement are
       dismissed because "We know best"
    * You enjoy being so far behind the
       industry technology
    * You enjoy being stiffled

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get back to treating your employees with genuine respect and support, instead of leading with fear of job loss.

    I have been working at EMC Insurance

    Pros

    Stable company with the appearance of secure jobs.

    Cons

    If you are in technology and have experience you will find yourself stuck behind low performing minimal education and no experience yes people. The company is due for a big correction but the poorly qualified will fight to stay so I am trying to get out to a less like government and better managed company to work for. The bosses do not live up to promises and they will sacrifice you to retain an image whether you have done something or not. Many time served promotion tracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Do not promote from within when the expertise and experience is not there. Bosses should not be able to hire and promote family especially when family's only qualication is being family Timeserved is the worst reason to promote someome.. I would not recommend this company to others.

    I have been working at EMC Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Stable company that is diversifying and growing. A very genuine and down to earth CEO that is very likable. Some good benefits. Well maintained work spaces. Many good co-workers.

    Cons

    Extreme amount of nepotism and cronyism in hiring and promotions on the side of the company I work in. Positions for family members of managers who have no degree or experience are equal to or higher than those of employees with 4 year degrees and experience. Have also seen denial of advancement to a longer term employee, but advancement allowed to a family member of same ranking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I would like to see management and their promotions to exhibit the high standards of honesty and integrity by hiring by qualifications that are measurable. Whether stockholder or employee social welfare by managers for friends and family is not a good business practice and creates both flight of high quality workers and dissatisfaction of employment due to double standards.

    I have been working at EMC Insurance as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    This is a fantastic company to work for in Des Moines. For a location in the Midwest, their compensation is quite adequate, and I have had very positive experiences with the people who work here. I would recommend you give the company a serious look whether you are just starting out, or looking for a change in careers.

    Cons

    This is not a very big company, so you'll have to figure out if that's alright with you. There may be some flexibility issues down the road, but I am not aware of those.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work. A good work culture at the top DOES trickle down to the bottom.

    I worked at EMC Insurance

    Pros

    Flextime is provided allowing you to work either 7-3:30/7:30-4/8-4:30. The Actuarial department was family friendly and understood the needs of parents. I felt appreciated and enjoyed coming to work. The Actuary department is very open and everyone gets along well making it an enjoyable place. Very stable and secure place to work. They do not lay off like neighboring companies do.

    Cons

    I felt like I did not have much growth opportunity. Working for EMC is a stable work environment and you have job security as long as you do not screw up. However, many people will stay because of job security therefore the chances to move up are limited.

    I worked at EMC Insurance

    Pros

    Teams are nice and small - hours are flexible.
    For the most part the workers in the P&T departments are good to work with.

    Cons

    Trap you in a Unisys/ Mapper /BIS /COOL ICE world that is horribly boring.
    Departmental and higher meetings were always a utter waste of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    People would rather work than sit though "games" and "fun" meetings.
    Find a way to let people do more than program, otherwise they are trapped there.
