I worked at EMC (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people; easy to work with especially during intense design brainstorming.

    Cons

No organization; requirements came in the form on phone calls after meetings in the midwest. Poor management.

    Advice to Management

    Surely you've heard it already.

I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, flexible work, lots of training, ability to move into different areas and locations. Been here 20 years have seen it go from amazing to barely passable.

    Cons

Was incredible experience in earlier years, true innovation and driven by engineers. Not the case any longer. Focused on mgmt by reports and not interested in feedback from field. Original talent long gone or forced out.

    Advice to Management

Stop continual focus shifts, stop trying to buy innovation, pay attention to field engineers who work with customers daily. Don't manage by report dashboards.

    Pros

Alot of products, most are #1 in the industry. Sales can be very beneficial.

    Cons

Stress! Quite a few micro managers and we lose alot of people because of it.

    Advice to Management

Go to AMA and take some classes.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible, mature work environment with great benefits. The people there are smart and knowledgeable of their products.

    Cons

Not a very innovative place outside of the core products and services they sell. It's not that there aren't good ideas, they just take a long time to come to light.

    Advice to Management

More integration between groups and departments might help improve the overall sales and delivery side of the business. It's a wonderful place to work, just a bit slow at times.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, great benefits. Access to latest in IT. Great co-workers and bosses. Excellent severance system (pay continuation) provides financial security.

    Cons

Quarterly reports that took so much time to write but were barely looked at by management. If you're assigned full-time to a client you don't truly feel part of EMC, as you're quite disconnected. Too many bosses and re-orgs (back a few years ago).

    Advice to Management

You're doing well. At the customer engagement level, more team leaders to encourage and assist the staff performing the work. And when the client ended my engagement, you were there to help me move on. Not many companies do that and it was incredibly appreciated.

    Pros

Great company to work for, above average wages. They do not hold back when it comes to raises, bonus money and rewards. They treat there people right

    Cons

Upper Management is in the ivory tower and not in touch with the lower levels. The only time you hear from them are at events such as kickoff or the like.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits. Some good people.

    Cons

There is too much overlap between products. Many of EMC's products compete against one another. EMC's products also compete against VMware and VCE's products (VMware and VCE are owned by EMC). This causes confusion for customers and needless internal strife for sales, and technical teams.

    Advice to Management

Get a clear product strategy and pursue it. Purpose built storage hardware is moving towards commoditization just like all hardware does over time.
