Pros
Management leaves you alone to get the job done.
Cons
One ding would be the building I work in needs some updates.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good job and maybe provide a new building for us folks in RTP.
Pros
Large Stable Company, Good Locations
Cons
Large Company, Management Structure is ancient.
Advice to Senior Management
Think agility, think start-up. The only thing cool at EMC for the past few years has been its checkbook and VMware
Pros
- For the most part the people are good to work with and to know (both in/out of the office). With a few exceptions of course
- Work is long and requires some overtime and weekend efforts - but most of the time you are rewarded for these.
- The RTP site is relaxed both in attire and in report structure
Cons
- There are some really good groups at EMC - RTP. For example, the RSA team, Solutions, Tech Pubs, DVT, and CS. But there are some groups that really need help like the Celerra group. They remain stuck in the past with old values and old views. They lack structure, firm guidance, and adequate exposure to the "outside" world. As EMC moves more towards convergence with their new storage lines, I expect this group to disappear (if it hasn't already).
Advice to those interviewing - pay close attention to advances, achievements, and future plans of the the specif group you are considering. If they don't have a 5 year plan - which Celerra does not, then they are probably the wrong group to settle into.
Advice to Senior Management
- Spend more time increasing your knowledge regarding the business-side of EMC. Learn about other roles within EMC to gain additional perspectives.
- Increase your employee management skills. For example, if you've been a manager at EMC for 10 years and you have only taken 5 employee management courses then you are not doing a good job. Before you can motivate your direct reports you have to first understand how to effectively manage employees.
Pros
strong company with several opportunities in engineering
Cons
Large company with associated complications
Advice to Senior Management
None
Pros
Selective managers in giving promotions.
Takes more time in implementing new idea.
Cons
Nothing to say for the management. They are really cool
Advice to Senior Management
Cool
Pros
At EMC, my skills and abilities have allowed me to define the work I do and the roll I perform. I'm encouraged to take risks and suggest alternate courses of action or other ways to do my job. I've also been given flexibility and freedom of where and when I work - as one of my colleagues had said, work is not a location or a time of day; it's an activity that can be done anywhere at any time.
Cons
The pace is demanding and the focus on delivering results is relentless. However, I'm still encouraged to exercise work-life balance and management recognizes that the expectations are high and stress levels can be high as well.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue on the course we are on - we've weathered bad times before and we'll do it again as long as we remain focused and committed to do the right thing for our customers, partners, shareholders, and our employees.
Pros
EMC Corpora tion was a tech nology leader in storage and network ing.
The best in technology
Second only to your people, your information is your organization's most important asset. EMC provides the technologies and tools that can help you release the power of your information. We can help you design, build, and manage flexible, scalable, and secure information infrastructures. And with these infrastructures, you'll be able to intelligently and efficiently store, protect, and manage your information so that it can be made accessible, searchable, shareable, and, ultimately, actionable.
In short, with an information infrastructure, you can avoid the potentially serious risks and reduce the significant costs associated with managing information, while fully exploiting its value for business advantage.
Cons
The team I worked with had people with over 20 yrs of experience
Very limited growth potential within the team
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the fat that exists within the company and allow young aggressive individuals room for growth
Pros
Benefits, Individual Offices (not cubes), Some talented people.
Cons
Managers are all legacy candidates who have been forced into management after being in development for 20+ years. Extremely poor people skills for managers. One motivational line from a manager - 'I own you!' - to a minority employee. Any new approach/solution is treated as a threat to the 'Culture' of the company (only the person saying it has a vision of what it means). Extremely limited opportunities in RTP. 250 people at the facility. No variety in internal mobility. Lot of jostling for work between RTP & Hopkinton HQ. People who have worked elsewhere cannot take the culture shock. Trust me it is. They usually leave within a year. About 40% of people staying there are staying due to other (family etc.) obligations and would move if possible.
Advice to Senior Management
Do your jobs.
Pros
Recognition for a job well done in terms of cash, gifts and stock options. Hard work is recognized and promotions do come to the well deserved. Training is emphasized as well where both technical and professional development courses are being offered. The tuition reimbursement program is quite generous and the diversity efforts are well organized.
Cons
There is quite a bit of bureaucracy which slows things down. It is sometimes difficult to perform small purchases that will help get the job done quicker. Very often, the purchase only come through when it has pass the deadline. Communications from Senior Management are not transparent enough and sometimes lost.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve communications channel.
