I have been working at EMC full-time

    Pros

This is the *only* company I have ever been in where they are asking you "What do you want to do next?"

In doing so, they are talking about advancement. This was evident in my initial interview where the interview team told me that I was overqualified. I was disappointed because I thought I was being shown the door, but instead, they brought me to a manager who ran a division where my skillset was a match (and better paid!)

Fast forward a few years later, and my current manager is looking to set me up for my next career step. Granted, I work very, very hard with little free time at work, but at the end of the day, I go home in time to have dinner, or enjoy whatever life has to offer outside of work.

Easy? No. But you are definitely captain of your own career there and by working hard and executing on expectations you put yourself in a position to succeed.

    Cons

The only real thing that seems to be a con is that it is a large company. Well over 20 billion dollars each year in revenue, you are at some level a number. If the overall corporate strategy changes, you could find yourself unemployed as your division no longer exists. I think that's the case in life though.
As my dad always said, "You pays yer monies and you takes yer chance!"

    Cons

Too big, sometimes you feel you are not important at all.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Awesome positioning... one trick pony companies are definitely on the extinction list as things move toward Cloud. Bigots who dont want to talk to EMC because of something somebody did or said years ago are really doing their own employers a disservice. By far best group of products AND people I've worked with.

    Cons

Product sprawl and overlap is starting to turn quarterly training into a heavy lift. Focusing can be a challenge. I'm fortunate in that my own management has given us marching orders for cutting through the clutter. emphasis on cost cutting when your own frontline hasn't had a salary raise in years rings hollow, but there are plenty of opportunities for advancement if you're not happy where you are.

I worked at EMC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

BRS division is great! Solid, experienced manager who allow you to work independently but are available if you need them. BRS Sales team is mostly very experienced, professional, intelligent and successful group of people. Really loved working at EMC.

    Cons

Need to have more diversity in employment. Storage reps seem to be micro managed. This is not a company for people who don't want to work hard and long hours! Sales reps can do well financially one year but then management raises quota so much it's tough to get to 100%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give reps the opportunity to have high earning potential every year and not just one. It's demotivating to know you will probably not be able to get over 100%.
Hire more diverse group of people.
