    Pros

The staff you work with is by far some of the most talented and driven people I have ever met. Every new role I have moved into has had new challenges and opportunities. This is not a company where you will find yourself bored or without enough real work to keep you motivated.

    Cons

Within any competitive environment where everyone wants to be the best it is very easy to find yourself working longer hours than you initially signed up for. Maintaining that work life balance is something every employee needs to manage for themselves.

    Pros

Culture and extremely smart consultants. Many of the sales guys understand storage quite well. Co-workers are quite nice and fun to be around. Culture and extremely smart consultants. Many of the sales guys understand storage quite well. Co-workers are quite nice and fun to be around.

    Cons

Management can be slow to make decisions. Lack of promoting consultants to higher positions such as senior consultant. Some are arrogant and seem to really push customers towards storage products they don't want or need.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more consultants from within, and listen more to customers.

Current Employee - Sales Representative  in  Livonia, MI
Current Employee - Sales Representative in Livonia, MI

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Growing company. Strong market presence. Can be a rough place to work, but it you're tough and want to make money, this is a good place to be.

    Cons

Weak middle management. Slow to integrate acquisitions. Needs to be bigger to take advantage of all the market opportunities. History of hard nosed selling still doesn't sit well with all customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow, topgrade, integrate. Now is the time to accelerate market share growth. Use those dollars to strength the sales force and channels. Size up some acquisition candidate to capture on the market upswing. We need more to sell. Sell more of VMWare. Just need a controlling interest. Take the extra dollars out for more acquisitions.

IF YOU WANT ADVANCEMENT AT EMC WORK IN HOPKINTON OR PLEASANTON (or stay in your present job for life)

    Current Employee - Sales Representative
    Current Employee - Sales Representative

    Pros

Name recognition of employer and products, time off is somewhat easy to schedule. The network of people is fantastic as their is good espirit de corp and some really sharp minds here.

    Cons

No advancement of career or any recognition if you are not at their offices in Boston or San Jose, CA. Enjoy the salary/comp you get when you join as it won't change unless you get promoted. You don't get promoted unless you work in boston or san jose or get a good, influential contact that does. Once EMC has you onboard, they just expect you to shut up and produce ("complainers" are laid off).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

OFFER CAREER DEVELOPMENT! PROMOTE AND RECOGNIZE STARS THAT ARE "IN THE FIELD" AND NOT AT CORPORATE OFFICES. This means actually doing it, not giving lip service to this in Cabo or in emails.

Current Employee - Systems Engineer in Detroit, MI

    Pros

EMC is a good place to work. I have flexible work hours and work hard based on what is required of me. I have been here a long time so my rapport with my peers is good. EMC offers excellent benefits like good salary, good health benefits, dental benefits, plus they offer a discount on multiple partner products like Dell and automotive discounts. EMC also provides money if you want to complete further education. I have been able to work on my own hours, have excellent vacation and able to take them anytime. I am also able to get some promotion in my ranks within EMC.

    Cons

I have been able to get new positions with EMC. They give too much preferences to core Hardware team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to Employees instead of listening to just the Core Hardware Team.

This is not a place where a true IT proffessional would work at . They love to outsource jobs

Former Employee - Senior Storage Operations Specialist in Hopkinton, MA

    Pros

If you are newbee to the Storage Industry this is a good place to get and gain work useful skillsets . Once you gain experience leave and make real money elsewhere. Great in-house training they believe in constant ongoing training.
Best training plan in the Storage Industry today.

    Cons

Treated as a number not a human being. Little or no recognition when you do a good job. Poor balance between quality of life and family life. EMC does not care about your family or quality of life. They will throw you to the wolves and those who survive it get to stay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Non responsive , Non Proactive. only reactive in crisis type situations. They lack constant feedback on constant (quarterly) employee work appraisal and performance reviews. Either your in the bubble or outside of the bubble . Favoritisim runs rampid "Good Old Boys Network". 4 Managers for every employee. Process overdriven versus getting product to market where it really counts. To many chiefs and not enough indians

Former Employee - Senior Product Manager  in  Hopkinton, MA
Former Employee - Senior Product Manager in Hopkinton, MA

    Pros

Stable large company that will be there even when time gets tough. Competitive starting pay. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Uncompetitive pay especially if you stay for more than 5 years. You may have a better chance to negotiate salary/benefit from outside in. So get some experience from a smaller vendor with a bigger title then come back to EMC will give you a better chance career wise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop within instead of buy. Cut the mid management. There are just too many Directors, VPs than people doing the actual work.

Current Employee - Software Engineer II  in  Hopkinton, MA
Current Employee - Software Engineer II in Hopkinton, MA

    Pros

In EMC one can get a tremendous number of opportunities from web development to a very low level systems engineer. Also a good combination of work and personal life balance.

    Cons

The downside of working at EMC is the common downside of working at any huge corporations - it's very easy to get lost inside and become just one regular employee (clerk) with no opportunities for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees are the greatest asset of this company and Senior Management has to value that.
