This place is inconsistent at best, and a lot of jobs are going to India. Irvine, CA is in the process of shutting down.

    Pros

Big company health benefits, overly restrictive 401K. Annual email blasts from upper management will try to convince you to vote as Best Place to Work in the US, so the entertainment value is high if you like drama. In fact, if you like drama this might be your best place to work. No I'm serious.

    Cons

Management communication quality is among the worst. They opened a new "Center for Excellence" in India and started sending jobs there once someone in upper management from India was installed in the ranks. So while they may be hiring in Irvine, CA for some positions, rest assured that as soon as they can replace you they will.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's OK to hire good managers, and to churn the bad ones. You've done neither very well. Some of these people routinely expose you to litigation on a weekly basis. I chuckle under my breath when I think of the other companies I've seen that also took a big fail on this (Motorola).

    Pros

Money in bank. EMC is very good at stashing lots of cash away while giving employees no annual pay raise!

    Cons

So many... (1) Employees are pressured to work without end. I come home from work after an 8AM-8PM period and open the laptop on the kitchen table (including many weekends). (2) Big releases are pitched as "we need to get this done to save our jobs!" (3) Release occurs and makes enormous money and then .... they lay off a lot of the design team. They call it "reshaping", "searching for top talent", "getting rid of the deadwood", .... They make up nice catchy terms for laying off U.S. workers and outsourcing as much as possible to China.

EMC product cycle includes: (1) Hiring smart/qualified U.S. workers ("top talent") to design and develop the new product under great stress ("permanent employee"). (2) Releasing the new product and performing initial maintenance releases. (3) Transferring all future support/maintenance to the China team. (4) Laying off many of the U.S. workers and labeling them "deadwood".

I've worked in the high tech industry for over 30 years and have never been part of such an evil culture. There are many managers at EMC who enjoy disrupting peoples lives and laying them off. You will be passively threatened each day at this company with losing your job. Your manager will readily throw you under the bus and blame problems on you.

And the truth is this company has very little innovation. Most of the work is porting the existing millions of code lines writing back in the 1990's to newer faster processors. This company simply buys other companies when it needs to innovate. Thus if you like code porting then you might like one thing about EMC.

    Pros

Nothing good here. Employee are treared very badly by top level management

    Cons

Due to the decision made by Top level Management Employes are treated very badly. Employees are fired according to the management will. performance of employee is neglected. And many more :(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Very bad way off firing. At-least improve the way you fire the employee. You are not here to create the Job.

    Pros

The company still has money in the bank. They've managed to be profitable over the years but they're products are becoming obsolete so put your seat belts on!

    Cons

    (1) The company has an unwritten policy of sending as many technical jobs to China as possible. There is currently a vast Chinese employee base and it's rapidly growing.
    (2) The company posts many jobs on their website but have you ever tried applying? These are mostly fake job postings for the U.S. worker and U.S. applicants are ignored. Ultimately the company claims there is no qualified worker in the U.S. for these jobs and they hire cheap foreign workers to fill these positions.
    (3) Annual layoff where they purge U.S. workers claiming they are deadweight in order to hire more Chinese and Indian workers. EMC does this at least twice per year.
    (4) U.S. workers constantly are intimated by management and threatened with being laid off.
    (5) No pay raises. Annual review is optional so you don't really know what's going on with your performance. That way they can blind-side you with a layoff claiming you're deadweight.
    (6) Age discrimination. Most managers won't hire anyone over 35 years old.
    (7) Internal group bickering and animosity.
    (8) Back stabbing is rewarded. People constantly throw each other under the bus.
    (9) Upper management priority is to fatten their wallets at the expense of company well-being.
    (10) Company will soon be run by bean counter who is a hatchet man. He couldn't care less about the American worker. The current CEO ONLY cares about propping up the stock price and fattening his wallet before he ascends.
    (11) Company has no creative thinkers and prefers to buy other companies to enhance the technology.

    Cons

to political of an environment. to many chiefs no indians. they put the wrong people in high positions who dont belong. higher ups do not know how to treat people. should have classes for managers/supervisors how to treat people and lead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to the employees when there is a complaint and act on it. when more than one person complains about the same individual something is wrong. and dont sweep it under the rug.

    Pros

I honestly can't think of any

    Cons

High stress environment for no apparent reason. Senior management have been there for their entire career and cater to people who are just like them. If you have different ideas/recommendations you will be labeled as a "trouble maker." HR is not there for the people but to help weed out the weak and support the 20 year veterans who have final say no matter what. Public humiliation is the norm.

I have no advice because nothing will change this culture.

Everybody knows EMC and having it on your resume is positive yet nobody will ask you why you want to leave. Great career advancement opportunity if you are a white male who trophy hunts and spends time with colleagues at the bar.

    Cons

    - Fear and shame based management -Who you know vs what you know success factor -Aggressive to point that drives many to enage in unethical behaviour which is often condoned

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take HR seriously. Management needs training. Biased culture so pervasive that it is normalized. Noi work life balance.
