    I have been working at EMC full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Decent health benefits. Competent workforce.

    Cons

    Compensation seems fair until you're working 50+ hours per week and being told you need to complete 40 hours of training per quarter on top of that. EMC headhunted me from one of their customers and contracted me out to another customer for their "Global Services" business. This has been nothing more than EMC acting like another TEKSystems. EMC claims to match up to 6% of your 401k contributions, but this is a lie, because they cap their contributions at $3000 per year. You would have to make $50,000 per year or less for them to truly match 6%. This is not competitive at all. EMC's recognition and reward program doesn't seem to exist in our group, because I haven't seen a single person benefit from this in the past year. Their solution for everything is to just work harder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Your Global Services division is a meat grinder. It's like working two full-time jobs, but only getting paid for one. You want to be on the "Best Places to Work" lists, but you're running a typical large company where the executives reap the rewards, and the people doing the actual work just scrape by.

    Pros

    Work/life balance in most system administration functions are good if you can set deliberate limits with managers (uncomfortable to say the least).

    Initial compensation may be adequate/good.

    Benefits program is well above the average.

    Company gym and cafeteria is a plus.

    Very intelligent senior employees, who are also friendly. Great place to learn if you're new to enterprise IT/processes.

    Cons

    Chances of raises are poor. You'd be lucky to break the yearly inflation rates in a 5-10 year span.

    Progression upwards is extremely limited. Several very experienced employees have left the company due to lack of progression.

    Internal departments and management lack autonomy and are subject to various counter-productive efforts pushed on by CXO executives with a lack of overall IT strategy.

    Lack of hiring and excessive standards have left bottlenecks in service delivery to the enterprise. This leaves IT to "put their foot down", or be subjected to 60-80 hour work weeks.

    There's a lack of recognition for hard work in general. Several innovative and over-achieving employees have left due to rigid HR compensation despite working on multiple high-profile projects for 80 hour weeks.

    Health problems (heart attacks, blood clots, etc) have occurred in engineering and IT teams from excessive stress and responsibility because management refuses to expand headcount.

    Training and development opportunities are very limited and restricted.

    Extremely political. You will need to treat it like an episode of "House of Cards" at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recognition would be appreciated by everyone.

    If you want to keep your talent, pay above the industry average in later raises. Not just in the initial hiring process.

    Lack of stress management is affecting virtually every individual in the IT organization. The grapevine is overwhelmed with cynicism and negativity from a lack of down-to-earth communication and lack of departmental autonomy.

    Some really smart, pretty cool people. Lots to learn and challenging environment.

    Quite rigid and senior mgmnt doesn't know the meaning of work/life balance. May depend on dept.

    IIG is Safe and easy going - if you toe the line. Upper management is political, with no influence on EMC corporate, swagger with nothing to back it.

    Pros

    Great for technical people. Flexible hours. Some very talented folks in IIG engg. Good pay and benefits. Safe place to park yourself.

    Always an opportunity to move out of IIG and into better divisions within EMC.

    Cons

    Management is not focussed on building good products. Competitors are overtaking in all aspects.

    New management is focussed on looking good themselves, surrounding themselves with yes men from past jobs causing serious attrition of existing talent. Employees are not given enough credit within the product management team. No growth.

    Not enough people left to build good competitive products.

    Too much politics between engineering middle management and product management. Nothing ever gets done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on building great products. Good things will follow. Listen to the long timers they are full of ideas.

    Build contemporary products that are actually going to be long term investments for customers.

    Very dynamic company with distributed, shared leadership. Lots of opportunities for learning & growth. High value placed on diversity & inclusion. Great products & services. Creative & powerful "federation" strategy.

    Still trying to break away from the perception of being a storage-centric company. High level of organizational complexity which can be confusing or frustrating for some people.

    Pros

    EMC offers great medical benefits. It also offers plenty of personal and professional development through both internal and external training. The undergraduate and master's levels programs reimbursed and even onsite can't be beat. There is a great opportunity to move to different areas of the company especially in corporate. I've also seen the largest change in attitude about making the work environment better in the last year. We now often have "just for fun" activities like cookouts, ice cream socials, bowling outings, etc. to boost morale and to build teamwork.

    Cons

    There are a few areas that EMC could improve in. First and foremost the company has been taken over by corporate guilt and is preoccupied with diversity. Promotions especially to mid level management are based on hitting quotas of different groups (by gender, sexual preference, ethnic group, etc.) and not who is the best person for the position. They've moved directors from their offices to convert them to transgender bathrooms and breast feeding rooms. Most are empty 99% of the time.

    EMC also has a poor vacation policy and caps out at 4 week for 10 years. The 401k match is also less than other companies especially in the tech area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Concentrate on the best person for a position and not trying to meet quotas. Concentrating on race, gender, etc. just creates reverse discrimination and further the problem.

    Look to reward long time employees with benefits that improve with longevity.
