Current Employee - Principal Software Engineer in White Plains, NY

    Pros

Financially stable, at least for the moment

    Cons

Big company mentality -- bureaucratic, slow to react, entrenched ways of doing things persist even if they are counter-productive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the entire IT department and get people who understand that IT's job is to make the company's people more productive.

Former Employee - Technical Consultant in Washington, DC

    Pros

Working in Professional Services allows a good work/life balance. You may have to wok hard sometimes but other times it is not too bad. People are respectful of when you need to take care of personal items and issues and many people telecommute. This is essentially a virtual organization now and with that, meetings and collaboration can sometimes be difficult. Expect to only see your manger's face 3 times a year. That can be good or bad depending on how much you can get done remotely and independantly.

    Cons

    Insane sales people and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay your employees more.

Former Employee - Staff Software Engineer  in  Santa Clara, CA
Former Employee - Staff Software Engineer in Santa Clara, CA

    Pros

The company offers flexible work hours/location - could telecommute once a week and start late, leave late on other days to beat traffic. Offers good large company benefits, though time-off could be better. Lot of coporate benefits available at head quarters in Boston, not in bay area.

    Cons

Too silo'ed, corporate head quarters in east coast is like different company. With the new software acquisitions, in different places, info aleays has to flow bottom-top-bottom. Not much lateral communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

improve transparency in decision making, delegate. management jobs seem to get guaranteed promotions senior, group /director levels; but no such luck for Technical ladder.

EMC is safe and profitable but not always exciting.

Current Employee - Software Engineer  in  Hopkinton, MA
Current Employee - Software Engineer in Hopkinton, MA

    Pros

The company is consistently successful so the jobs are normally safe. High achievers can get good bonuses. Stock options are given although the stock has not gone up significantly in many years (although then some blips). The company has bought many smaller companies which offer different technical options for engineers.

    Cons

Some jobs are stressful and lack growth options. The company periodically fires low performers. When this is done the individual must leave the next day. It is possible to be a mediocre performer and hide. The company is good at maintaining and putting out its core products but not so good at introducing new products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Do not outsource.

Great company for storage infrastructure professionals

Current Employee - Solutions Architect  in  McLean, VA
Current Employee - Solutions Architect in McLean, VA

    Pros

There are many opportunities for advancement and/or lateral movement within EMC, as it is a large company with many divisions. EMC has a good education program, and provides employees with access to labs, documentation, whitepapers, discussion groups, etc, where we can learn more about EMC products and develop & test procedures prior to going onsite. And as a storage professional, it's definitely a plus to work for the #1 player in the storage industry.

    Cons

Communication & coordination between divisions is sometimes difficult. There is little organization or search capability within the company intranet resources. Within the professional services organization, EMC management seems to focus more provide more for the presales personnel than the post-sales/delivery group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities for postsales personnel, such as a yearly conference for the delivery teams. Compensate/reimburse for 3rd party certifications.

A good place to work if you prefer a big company

Former Employee - Senior Director in Hopkinton, MA

    Pros

Lots of opportunity. They are good at helping plan your career and allowing you to move within the company to different roles.

    Cons

It's a very big company and it's easy to get lost. Sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Getting everyone on the same page is sometimes problematic given the sheer number of products and services we sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication as to strategic direction. Be very clear about what we are trying to accomplish and make sure everyone has the tools and resources to do their job. That's what management is all about. They do a pretty good job, but it could be better.

Most unprofessional company I've ever worked for...

Former Employee - Project Manager  in  Santa Clara, CA
Former Employee - Project Manager in Santa Clara, CA

    Pros

At the time I worked there, the salary was market rate. Flexible with working remote. Looks good on resume.

    Cons

Highly political. If you are on the West Coast, brace yourself for working with an East Coast company. An Old White Boys network that was sexist to say the least. Really bad managers are allowed to stay because of who they know in the company and this forces good employees out. Not uncommon for employees to be dressed down by management in front of their peers. Truly the worst, most unprofessional company I've ever worked for. I left a few years ago and the memory of it still haunts me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire experienced managers, not the friends of employees to do the job. Ensure managers attend training on how to manage people, and to learn what is appropriate conduct in an office since many of them don't have a clue and behave like it's still the '70s.
