Some good and some improvements needed

I have been working at EMC

    Pros

Interesting work within a changing environment. Things change year to year, so the job is not stagnant.

Very good benefits, 401k matching, health care options for singles and families.

Openness to moving around within the company every 2-3 years. The company has tried hard to introduce new things to enhance overall experience (upgraded free coffee, random events with free beer during workday, good items at the cafeteria).

Flexible work schedule (remote options, work-wise program) are available and management is open to letting their employees find the right balance.

    Cons

The type of work changes based on Sr. Leadership decisions. Very reactive as a company, will make sweeping changes without a lot of understanding of what it takes to change.

Pay scale is very lopsided, and year to year increases are extremely small, barely growing for inflation. Yearly reviews are done separately from Annual Compensation Reviews, thus taking all the negotiation power away from the employee. The Yearly reviews do not reflect the type of work the resource is providing to the group/company. Extreme lack of understanding of how to keep talent motivated and within the EMC family. Losing many people to start ups, based on tedious work and lower salary. In a good job market, EMC cannot compete if they don't change their salary and recognition standards.

Some groups there is zero ability to move up, thus forcing the resource to look into other groups for promotions. HR is very hardlined about not going above the standard increase for even the top resources.

    Advice to Management

Need to create more opportunities within the same groups. Consider moving people around in order to keep them fresh and cross-trained when people leave.

Need to promote and incentivize good "managers". These people are few and far between and it hurts the overall work environment when they leave.

    Pros

Interesting work. Stable. Good benefits, particularly 401k match and healthcare. Good about work flexibility. Good crowd of co-workers all things considered.

    Cons

Will not typically pay top dollar. Culturally it's set on its ways. Not great about recognition. Upper management has been there a while and that makes change difficult.

    Advice to Management

Too much recruiting from within. Need some outside top talent to cross-pollinate. Need to do a better job to identify and retain top talent.

    Pros

The company has great benefits if you are hired on to the company. Many of the new hires are hired on as contractors and within a year the company may convert you over to a full time employee.

    Cons

There is not very much room to move up within a specific department. The company does not offer promotions unless you are to switch departments.

    Pros

Solid company with good benefits & good pay. Managment tends to be decent, especally on the sevices side. Good place to learn storage and storage services. My coworkers were mostly top notch. Joe Tucci seems to be a smart CEO and was fun to watch.

    Cons

Seems like managment reorgs happen about once a year and turn things topsy turvy. A good direct manager can smooth these bumps, but not remove them. Heavily sales spiff driven culture which can be a challenge to a solutions driven archtect.
Not the place to be if you want to learn about the new things going on in the industry.

    Advice to Management

Not much I can say here. Federation seems to be working for the shareholders. Perhaps look for ways to bring the salespeople back to earth.

Great learning opportunity for learning, but not a place for a long term career.

    Pros

Lots of great little perks like most IT companies today. The benefits are very good. I also had the opportunity to work with some very bright and talented people. They have the resources to do what needs to be done, and are willing to invest in the future of the company.

When they buy a company they are also pretty good at leaving the culture of the company independent, and don't make it as cold and stuffy as the headquarters.

    Cons

EMC has a very competitive and siloed culture company wide. It's not a place to work if you are not willing to play political games, are super aggressive, constantly push back on people and toot your own horn. They are also quick to squeeze out anyone that doesn't fit their mold in non-engineering positions, leaving no room for diversity of any kind. Somthing they are aware of from their HR speak, but it's not changing.

They are trying hard to steer the massive ship to adapt to market trends but it's slow and sluggish, and very reactionary in every way. They fail to hire people who understand the market trends they want to follow.

    Advice to Management

Start knocking down silos, and stop enforcing them with the culture and compensation structure.

    Pros

Good benefits that are evaluated and improved each year. Well respected company. Sales team is very strong.

    Cons

Management is confused on what to do. This is company that sells an on-premise storage hardware and the market is no longer growing. They are searching for an identity. Re-orgs and name changes for divisions is common. They encourage multiple teams to work on the same project and don't mind the inefficiency in that. Hiring practices are atrocious. Salaries are way behind the competition. Too many acquisitions without proper integration, so you'll work with teams that aren't even on the network yet, don't use the same tools, etc. Facilities in some locations are great and in others they are way below standard. There is a reason the stock price has been stagnant for the last 6 years.

    Advice to Management

Figure out the vision and actually get behind it. You can't expect to compete with the big boys but not actually invest in it or keep the people around that can affect change. Pay competitive salaries and fix the government red-tape approach to every aspect of the business.
