I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Better than average job security; generally laid back organizational culture; good benefits;

    Cons

not many growth prospects from within but depends more on who you know; Major decisions and policies dictated by parent Germany company Merck KGaA; not much innovation from the company but acquired mainly through acquisitions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Merck KGaA's oppressive oversight of EMD Millipore

Current Employee - Senior Manager in Billerica, MA

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time

    Pros

Great, but rapidly aging product lines. Decent benefits but there is room to improve. Most people in the US are great to work with. Most US managers are flexible.

    Cons

Current management is all about German parent company Merck KGaA with little interest/focus on our EMD Millipore/US customers and their needs. Merck KGaA's internal processes are quite burdensome and inhibit innovation. I have come to see Merck KGaA as a company more focused on meeting the requirements of their internal processes than actually developing or inventing any new products. Pity the poor US manager who is not at the beck and call of his/her German boss.
Merck KGaA uses EMD Millipore as a cash cow (US$), and burdens EMD Millipore employees with a very heavy workload due to insufficient workforce and constant budget restraints/games in terms of adding head count in the US. However, these same constraints don't apply to our Merck colleagues who are able to hire for German positions whenever needed; in addition our German Merck colleagues have much better benefits - more vacation time, job protection, an actual pension, and better salaries. Recognition/promotions for women virtually nonexistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use and promote the talent within the company; become more customer focused, and product driven; streamline our internal processes to make things more efficient and flexible.
    Increase the US workforce!!!!

I worked at EMD Millipore as a contractor

    Pros

Good benefits, generous time-off, competitive or good pay depending on your position.

    Cons

This is a German company who has acquired several US companies in years past. They have global presence but do not and cannot function as a global company. Still attempting to unified company policies across the board between their different companies. They DO NOT have set policies, guidelines, and standards. Does not offer formal training classes for the job one is hired to do. Training happens on the job, but careful because if you're a contract employee and you request for more training or make a mistake they will let you go immediately. Many on-site employees treat contractors (temp employees) with less respect and view them as disposable. Therefore, does not put in as much effort in interaction or assistance in helping contractors acclimate and succeed in their role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer proper training to your employees and contractors. Provide the tools and environment to allows your workers to succeed and perform their job at the highest level. Give people the opportunity to learn and grow. Don't encourage learning on the job if there is ZERO tolerance for errors. You can't learn if you never make mistakes. Teach your HR Business Partners business etiquette and manners, some of them need to get off their high horse. Your company employs a high % of contractors (temp employees) you should install a corporate culture educating employees that contractors are the same as them. Contractor s provide equal work, equal skills, and deserves equal respect!

    Pros

Very professioal, challenging, and great place to work. Very good health benefits,, vacation and 401k match.

    Cons

Tough to keep such a large global company on the same page with regards to company culture and practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Many are still managers from Millipore, before the Merck KGaA acquisition and are highly regarded.

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked for Millipore and EMD Millipore for over 15 years. Very competitive benefits and salaries. Still offer a bonus when company meets target. You will not be disappointed in this area. The people that I work with are wonderful. The culture is definitely now one of a big company. Personal growth is very important and expected, but you must be motivated to drive this for yourself. This is not a company that holds your hand. I have changed my career path within EMD Millipore and was supported 100% EMD Millipore is evolving and looks like it plans to continue to evolve to support the market it serves. For the most part, the work "in the trenches" has not changed. Facilities are well-kept and comfortable.

    Cons

Millipore used to be a more "family-oriented" company with more options for a better "work-life" balance, such as, job-sharing, part-time positions, 4-day work weeks, even on-site childcare, etc. These options have been almost completely eliminated over the years and are only decreasing within EMD Millipore. You must be ready to embrace change. This company has been evolving over the past ten years, non-stop. It is a significant challenge to keep up with the changes.. Quality may have suffered a bit due to this. Expect to adhere to many policies and have many restrictions (since Merck has taken over there are many more 'rules"). The leadership has become very impersonal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe, we need time to master new ideas and become "great" at what we do. Too much change may not be good.

I worked at EMD Millipore as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is very professional yet friendly and always ready to help. Team environment.

    Cons

Sad that I could only work there on a 1 year contract, but company is re-organizing. HR is a secret organization, you know they're busy doing something because of the programs they sponsor but they are not easily available nor do you know who to contact. Like anyplace however, you will find good and bad managers - I had a great one!

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary was very good, bonuses ranged from very good to excellent. Many talented people there, though most of the best are now gone.

    Cons

Since the takeover by Merck, the company has become both massively bureaucratic and massively disorganized. The way that management thinks the company runs is pure fiction. The heavy process that is forced onto everything has become the product and the actual quality what the company sells is not really important anymore. Concern about products and customers that used to be paramount is not even a consideration now.

A new generation of fake workers has been hired. Fake here means that they don't really do anything except to act as cheerleaders for management - which seems to be exactly what management wants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop playing silly games, learn to listen instead of dictating, stop celebrating fake successes and start working to make real successes. Get rid of all the fakers.

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, great place to develop professional skills, opportunites to gain international work experience, stable industry

    Cons

Although upper management continues to talk about talent retention in Town Hall meetings, there's been a lot of internal experts resigning this year. Difficult to move up the ladder if you don't come into the company at a manager's level. Good performance doesn't seem to matter so long as the pharma division continues to underperform. This translates into hiring freezes - many of the positions opening up due to resignations are not being refilled. Workloads are increasing. Constant reshuffling of org charts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going to talk about talent retention, then start putting some effort into actually retaining talent.
