Merck KGaA's oppressive oversight of EMD Millipore

Current Employee - Senior Manager in Billerica, MA
Current Employee - Senior Manager in Billerica, MA

I have been working at EMD Millipore full-time

    Pros

Great, but rapidly aging product lines. Decent benefits but there is room to improve. Most people in the US are great to work with. Most US managers are flexible.

    Cons

Current management is all about German parent company Merck KGaA with little interest/focus on our EMD Millipore/US customers and their needs. Merck KGaA's internal processes are quite burdensome and inhibit innovation. I have come to see Merck KGaA as a company more focused on meeting the requirements of their internal processes than actually developing or inventing any new products. Pity the poor US manager who is not at the beck and call of his/her German boss.
Merck KGaA uses EMD Millipore as a cash cow (US$), and burdens EMD Millipore employees with a very heavy workload due to insufficient workforce and constant budget restraints/games in terms of adding head count in the US. However, these same constraints don't apply to our Merck colleagues who are able to hire for German positions whenever needed; in addition our German Merck colleagues have much better benefits - more vacation time, job protection, an actual pension, and better salaries. Recognition/promotions for women virtually nonexistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use and promote the talent within the company; become more customer focused, and product driven; streamline our internal processes to make things more efficient and flexible.
    Increase the US workforce!!!!

Former Contractor - Human Resources Services in Billerica, MA

I worked at EMD Millipore as a contractor

    Pros

Good benefits, generous time-off, competitive or good pay depending on your position.

    Cons

This is a German company who has acquired several US companies in years past. They have global presence but do not and cannot function as a global company. Still attempting to unified company policies across the board between their different companies. They DO NOT have set policies, guidelines, and standards. Does not offer formal training classes for the job one is hired to do. Training happens on the job, but careful because if you're a contract employee and you request for more training or make a mistake they will let you go immediately. Many on-site employees treat contractors (temp employees) with less respect and view them as disposable. Therefore, does not put in as much effort in interaction or assistance in helping contractors acclimate and succeed in their role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer proper training to your employees and contractors. Provide the tools and environment to allows your workers to succeed and perform their job at the highest level. Give people the opportunity to learn and grow. Don't encourage learning on the job if there is ZERO tolerance for errors. You can't learn if you never make mistakes. Teach your HR Business Partners business etiquette and manners, some of them need to get off their high horse. Your company employs a high % of contractors (temp employees) you should install a corporate culture educating employees that contractors are the same as them. Contractor s provide equal work, equal skills, and deserves equal respect!
