Pros
It's an interesting and constantly changing business, there is a lot of opportunity to grow and be creative, most of upper management is smart and creative, and there are good benefits and perks.
Cons
Hard and creative work is not necessarily rewarded without one asking for the reward. Communication among executives in the company is sometimes not as good as it could be.
Advice to Senior Management
There could be better communication among executives worldwide, and hard, creative work could be recognized sooner.
Pros
The music. Best catalog in the business.
Cons
Endless strategizing and discussions about systems of doing business based on theory has ground any actual work and progress to a halt. Only a few in the company actually work. Upper management and the new leadership don't seen to be in tune and understand the realities of the business and set unobtainable goals. Poor leadership in the upper levels in general internally and externally no one in the business knows their names.
Advice to Senior Management
Step out of the ivory tower and learn the realities of the business. Build some real relationships out there.
Pros
One of my favorite things is the two weeks off at the end of the year. Give or take a day or two but you get a nice amount of time to spend the holiday's with family. Along with the 2 weeks of paid vacation you already get throughout the year this is an added extra bonus that makes everything else bearable.
Cons
Communication is a problem and it is still a boys club. This is not a company that does things as an office. You come to work and work and there is little to no "hanging out" amongst employees at or after work. It is disappointing since there is potential for many opportunities to be supportive as a company. Many people are left out - unless you are in creative you do not hear of events and aren't invited.
Advice to Senior Management
Include the office in events. Allow them to get away from their desks - this is the music business after all. Think before you act.
Pros
The handful of people left who actually have experience in the Music Business, and are knowledgeable and nice and have to constantly clean up the messes and put out fires caused by the lack of experience of others.
Cons
Sr. Management whose only experience in the music business is the few years they have been at EMI.
Advice to Senior Management
Get some industry experience before you try and run a company! Or at least read the trades!
Pros
Free cds and some nice people who unfortunately are no longer there.
Cons
They handled the corporate restructuring and subsequent lay offs so poorly. There was no communication from management regarding who would be effected and people didn't know what was happening until the day they were let go. There were so many opportunities to handle the situation better but in the end they just let everyone go and let the few lucky remaining ones clean up the mess as they continued to hire and over pay at the top management level.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop over paying management and retain employees who actually do the work and have company and industry knowledge. Reshaping a failing industry with nothing but outsiders is destined to fail!
