I worked at ENSCO (VA) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Springfield office culture was excellent. Nice people who are good at their jobs. Employees generally care about their work and are technically successful. Family friendly workplace. Pay and benefits are decent.

    Cons

Recent high level management changes have been a bad experience. NSS has had 2 new division VPs in the past few years, each a downgrade on the previous leader. Current leadership lacks understanding of the business and has run off many of the best project managers and top technical performers. Each group is expected to do it's own business development with minimal support at a division level. All of NSS shares one business developer, leading to many missed opportunities. BD resources are focused on not losing existing work in stagnant areas instead of growing the business. Office culture is changing for the worse. Much of the new work is offsite so the main campus is a ghost town. Senior people are leaving rapidly. Senior corporate management is well meaning but indecisive.

    Advice to Management

Refocus on the company's strengths (strong technical performance, culture) and get some competent middle and senior managers. Provide business development resources to grow the business instead of treading water focusing on work without any growth potential.

I worked at ENSCO (VA) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The work is interesting and their is lots of opportunity to work on different projects.

    Cons

The only way to move up in the company is by working very long hours. The company has lost all site of work/life balance. The Springfield office is a moldy old warehouse turned into offices. The company is about the same size it was 10 years ago. No growth = no opportunity for advancement. The benefits were pretty good 10 years ago but since then they have made substantial changes to make them worse. The paid time off benefit was substantially reduced so all new employees get a lot less time off then the old employees. The health insurance was pretty good back then too but now it's very expensive and mediocre at best.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to the highest bidder. It is clear that the current ownership/leadership is incapable of growing and leading the company.

    Pros

Company puts employees first and treats them right. Top management listens to employees and does their best to ensure they are treated well and with respect.

    Cons

Nothing negative here. One of the better companies I have ever worked for.

    Pros

    Office location within city limits.

    Cons

Disjointed efforts at hiring and personnel management, retention. Frequent shifts in assigned tasks, after a cross-country move to accept job doing one thing, tried to make me do another job, then still another (neither of which I was qualified to do). This led to my departure. Work for higher-echelon employees approaches 80 hours a week. Lack of leadership at corporate level marked by frequent changes to executive ranks. I would not advise working here.

I have been working at ENSCO (VA) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are many different types of projects to work on, so you can find something suited to your talents. Everyone is friendly and willing to answer questions that you have if you get stuck, which helps move things along faster.

    Cons

The benefits are good, but can be costly depending on if you're single or have a family. There's not much communication between you and your manager unless you're both working on the same project. Salary does not match other contractors in the area.

    Advice to Management

Adjust your project schedules based on prior projects, and have more communication between managers and the employees they manage. Adding an additional person to the project early on could prevent having to throw five people at it later when an emergency occurs.

I have been working at ENSCO (VA) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly, casual workplace with good company culture fueled by great employees. National Security Solutions (NSS) division works on important, challenging, and interesting solutions for its customers. Motivated employees can rapidly grow into project leadership to creatively contribute to/steer program development.

    Cons

Lack of technical mentorship; specialized work teams do not facilitate apprenticeship and skill development. Corporate leadership transitions and instability over past 24 months have not clarified company's future direction. Minimal investment in Internal Research & Development challenges new business growth and competitiveness; new ideas need immediate customer.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to define, communicate and adhere to a realistic company identity, mission statement, and vision. Corporate leadership must embrace and support positive changes proposed by upper management.

    Pros

Very family oriented relaxed work environment Opportunities are there and if you are willing then you could really contribute to the overall mission of the division.

    Cons

Lack of collaboration among groups and divisions Technology is a bit dated, not as cutting edge as bigger competitors IMO A little too relaxed work environment

    Advice to Management

Emphasize training opportunities, not many employees are even aware that company offers Tuition Reimbursement. Encourage employees to join associations.

    Pros

Above average benefits. Office culture generally congenial and easy going. Most of the people are good to work with. Dress code is business casual to casual. Management is generally very concerned about employee satisfaction.

    Cons

Lacks technical capabilities and resources to be able to meet aggressive business acquisition goals. Springfield office is owned by company but generally run down.

    Advice to Management

Get a better understanding of the technical limitations of your employees and resources/facilities. Spend more IR&D funds to improve capabilities. Close down the Springfield office and move into a more price competitive modern facility.

    Pros

It is a company which gives a lot of variety in a way that the employees get to wear multiple hats at the same time. It has a great work life balance for employees with families.

    Cons

Insufficient reward and recognition Limited growth prospects Lack sense of direction People are reluctant to change

    Advice to Management

Need to provide at-least some sort of recognition, if not reward to the employees to keep them motivated.

I worked at ENSCO (VA) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company provides very good benefits - the retirement plans are better than the industry, the salary is quite competitive. Lot of the employees have been around for a long time, so they are knowledgeable about any issues that crop up.

    Cons

The company management lacks long term vision. The company culture is bit insular, you don't get to know much what the other divisions are doing - even though there can be some expertise overlap across divisions there is hardly any collaboration. The retirement plans have a very long vesting period.
