Excellent place to do research as a PhD student

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsEPFL's graduate program is among the top ones worldwide. You will enjoy having plenty of resources available to do your research and will also have access to top experts in various fields with whom you can interact and advance in your research.

ConsCertain labs at EPFL have the tendency to pay only a fraction of the salary (e.g. 75%) because as a graduate student you need to contribute to your education. Although the salary is still decent, it doesn't feel fair to get only a fraction of what other colleagues make.

ProsIn EPFL you have a lot of space for pursuing personal goals and objectives. And lots of people willing to help you on that. The EPFL name on your CV will open a lot of doors for you.

ConsEPFL is still quite far away from the reality and market. No real deadline, no stress, which is quite good but it does not prepare oneself to the outside academia rhythms.

    PhD student

    PhD Student (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent reputation of the school, good pay, a lot of money for ideas and for going to conferences and buying equipment, really bright professors, doing excellent science.

ConsConditions vary from lab to lab, some people work and live nicely during their PhDs, the others work like slaves, literally, sometimes really too much pressure for producing publications; one of the most difficult things is to find a flat in Lausanne, Switzerland is sometimes a very harsh place if you are not a Swiss or not from an EU country, it is difficult to make friends.

Advice to Senior ManagementAssistance when finding accommodation basically does not exist, people give you a sheet of paper with a list of phone numbers and that is all.

Competitive research environment with stringent supervising not allowing free and independent thinking

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsState of the art technologies allow fortop research and bright and helpful employees supporting. Good salaryand good infrastructure will not make up for the cons.

ConsDusty, dictatorial and conservative ways of project management. No leadership with no focus on and little personal support for individuals. Welcome to modern because paid slavery!

Advice to Senior ManagementSonne continuous education for project managers to build up some skills in modem leadership could surely boost sustainability of the research and the already good performance.
