    I worked at ETH Zurich

    Pros

Flexible work hours, interaction with students, you are completely free in composing your lectures as long as the students are prepared for the exam at the end of the semester.

    Cons

Salary is low copared to the invested time. If you are very engaged in your work, the students will contact you with questions throughout the week, but you wont be recompensated for extra time.

  3. I highly recommend ETH Zurich, surely must be one of the best and strongest technical universities in continental Europe

    Pros

Salaries are high, HR is great, competitive research environment, safe and clean, rich society, socialisation is easy due to the many expats, english may not be sufficient everywhere

    Cons

Conservative attitude of the swiss, strict rules, private life and leisure is ultra expensive, socialisation and integration with the swiss people is difficult

I worked at ETH Zurich part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

OK pay when compared to what a RA gets in other countries. Even have paid vacation and benefits.

    Cons

Needs a bit of paper work to get work permit. Only allows 15 hours a week maximum and needs to wait 6 months before an international student could apply for such positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it easy for international graduate students to apply for jobs in research and teaching.

I have been working at ETH Zurich full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Zurich is a nice city, and the ETH is an international workplace

    Cons

There are unfortunately strict rules regarding scientific tracks and age limits for hiring specific job categories, making it very difficult to make a career here.

I worked at ETH Zurich full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work, excellent lab equipment and generally very well funded. Salary is excellent for a university but still not competetive with industry at the post-doctoral level.

    Cons

Lots of (but usually flexible) hours, not very familiy friendly (almost impossible to get daycare spots), very few permanent positions and virtually impossible to get tenure from within,

I have been working at ETH Zurich

    Pros

Inspiring place to work at. Strongly depends on which research group one works in, but usually good opportunities for collaboration.

    Cons

    Strongly depends on group leader.

I worked at ETH Zurich full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Resources to perform high caliber research among high (and low) caliber researchers. Such good opportunity to drop in on classes, to see world class seminars of researchers and intellectuals passing through. A great 'feel' of the place, where education and research are highly respected and appreciated. ETH offers great holiday (25 days plus Christmas week and other national/canton holidays). ETH and Zurich have great resources for children and families.

    Cons

You need to march into the HR office and ask to see the salary/career track you are on. Do not expect that a professor or secretary will know or guide you in this very important issue. Annual reviews are often ignored so you might not know how you stand. But know going in if you are on an academic path: this is a temporary stop on your way to elsewhere, as permanent employment as an academic in the Swiss system is very difficult. Even temporary, this is well worth it. ETH pays well, especially compared to other universities. But you live in a town of banks and bankers and rent is all that much higher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep Chair budgets balanced and watch their incentive structures.

I worked at ETH Zurich as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

energetic very motivating working environment, well structured work approach, capable supervisors, fair working relationships, flexible working hours, sport center close to the work place

    Cons

I was very satisfied with the conditions ETHZ offered to the trainees. At the arrival one must be careful to keep enough time for accommodation search. The ETHZ provides you information/offers but will be not actively search it for you.
