    Pros

Flexible work hours, interaction with students, you are completely free in composing your lectures as long as the students are prepared for the exam at the end of the semester.

    Cons

Salary is low copared to the invested time. If you are very engaged in your work, the students will contact you with questions throughout the week, but you wont be recompensated for extra time.

    Pros

    -Excellent scientific facility at Honggerberg
    -Colleagues pleasant to work with
-English widely spoken. No language barrier if you don't speak German.
-Pay considerably higher compares to US and Europe.

    Cons

-Seemingly no regulation from HR on salary. Professors can offer salary to candidates that is between 60-100% of the official figure published on the ETH website (currently CHF 86300 for a first year postdoc).
-Bureaucratic support staff. When you request help, some would first check if they are required to help you.

    Advice to Management

Introduce transparency to postdoc pay structure. Eliminate the fake part-time system that makes postdocs work full time at a reduced level of employment.

  7. For university measures excellent place to work.

    Pros

Excellent science (of course depends on your group), excellent infrastructure and IT support, lots of good possibilities for advanced vocational training.

    Cons

Security of job. Maximum time of 6 years is allowed to stay beyond post-doc time, so no career opportunities if one does not plan for a professorship. Only one permanent senior scientist position allowed per research group (status of 2015)

    Advice to Management

Take more permanent senior stuff positions into consideration.

I have been working at ETH Zurich

    Pros

Great infrastructure, facilities, work-life balance. Basel Biosystems Science and Engineering campus is near FMI institute, University of Basel, Roche, and Novartis, but very little access to ETH Zurich's main campus. Very professional in terms of managing the building, IT infrastructure, microscopy facilities, and providing help to researchers whenever they need it. Very good pay and time off.

    Cons

Doesn't feel like a university setting outside of the building, located in a more industrial setting. Don't have access to all of the intellectual resources and diversity of a true University campus, even though BSSE department is very strong overall in our research areas. Need more interactions with collaborators, other universities, and industry. Could take better advantage of Roche and Novartis in Basel.

  9. Helpful (1)

I highly recommend ETH Zurich, surely must be one of the best and strongest technical universities in continental Europe

    Pros

Salaries are high, HR is great, competitive research environment, safe and clean, rich society, socialisation is easy due to the many expats, english may not be sufficient everywhere

    Cons

Conservative attitude of the swiss, strict rules, private life and leisure is ultra expensive, socialisation and integration with the swiss people is difficult

    Pros

OK pay when compared to what a RA gets in other countries. Even have paid vacation and benefits.

    Cons

Needs a bit of paper work to get work permit. Only allows 15 hours a week maximum and needs to wait 6 months before an international student could apply for such positions.

    Advice to Management

Make it easy for international graduate students to apply for jobs in research and teaching.

    Pros

Zurich is a nice city, and the ETH is an international workplace

    Cons

There are unfortunately strict rules regarding scientific tracks and age limits for hiring specific job categories, making it very difficult to make a career here.
