Great place to get a LOT of knowledge FAST! (but you have to put in the hours)

Senior Associate (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at EY full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe small teams allow for more autonomy (if you get on a good client). The compensation is very good and the insurance coverage and 401(k) are fantastic. During the non-busy season many of the teams allow for working more hours M-F and taking half-days on Friday. Further, EY is moving forward with a HUGE tech overhaul that will make remote working much more feasible.

ConsLets be honest....working in public accounting at a "Big 4" firm requires a LOT of your time. But 4 years here is better than starting out in industry. If you start at a staff position in at an "industry" company, you may still be in that position in 4 years. But you definitely would not leave EY after 4 years and start at a staff position (at least not in the current economy).

Good transaction experience

Transaction Advisory Services Senior (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at EY full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorked in Valuation and Business Modeling subgroup out of school. Good exposure to high profile clients. Most people are nice to work with and somewhat flexible. Smaller engagement sizes you give you responsibility quickly. Learn valuation fundamentals and a lot of accounting. The rotation program is fantastic and allows you to work in other groups for 3 month periods.

ConsDoing SAS reviews for audit and tax team are a big pain. Formal structure makes advancement slower. Work can get repetitive. Busy season (Dec-March) can necessitate 70+ hour work weeks and pay will lag skills and hours.

Great learning culture - challenging work, hours.

IT Audit Staff (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at EY full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat people very willing to support and provide feedback for recent hires. Great support structure to help network within your practice area. Held to a high standard of performance.

ConsCan be political at times. At staff level work is tedious often times uninspiring. Busy season is challenging, easy to get wrapped up in work and become entirely absorbed.

"Work Hard, Play Hard" is actually "Work Hard, Work Harder, and then Work some more."

Senior (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at EY full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLarge firm with above-average benefits, good reputation, and plenty of opportunities if you take it upon yourself to become exposed to them.

ConsCan easily become a number and get 'silo'-ed into a niche. Work-life balance is almost non-existent.

Winter Assurance Intern, great pay but insane hours. Everyone complained about the work/life balance.

Auditor (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at EY as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat pay and amazing experience

Cons50-60 hour weeks
Some managers are grumpy

Advice to Senior ManagementThe managers from my first engagement complained about me. They said I did not know what I was doing. Obviously, I'm an intern on my first job, ridiculous.

Transaction Advisory Services Senior (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at EY full-time for more than a year

Prosgood business growth prospect
strong culture of inclusion
competitive starting salaries and benefits
mostly helpful colleagues
great opportunities at client engagements
your manager may give you a lot of responsibility and freedom to be creative in how you deliver work products

Consterrible IT and tech system infrastructure, but it is slowly being upgraded
under-reporting hours is unofficially expected
stated cultural values are not always evident in practice
poor work-life balance
utilization achievement is out of the control of managers and below in rank but people are measured by this in performance reviews
complex and onerous expense reimbursement policies

Advice to Senior Managementprovide consultants an environment where they can come to management to ask difficult questions and not fear retaliation in performance reviews
make sure that things stated in orientation will ring true to people once they are hired
be more realistic in terms of how much extra work (off hours and weekends) you expect out of your people in addition to doing project work
