I was an intern for 6 weeks in the London office (HR Advisory team - at the time this was Tax).

    Intern (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsI was given the opportunity to absorb and learn from several team members, and my placement manager was considerate in giving one-to-one sessions on a weekly basis to track my goals. I was impressed by the thought and care taken into teaching me organisational structures, how to create documents for clients, etc. There were plenty of social events arranged for interns too, including a ball at the end of the 6 weeks.

ConsThe one issue was being pigeon-holed so early on. Understandably, candidates needed to apply to a business unit. Yet as university students who have had little work experience, we didn't fully understand the differences between EY's many departments during application. After being placed in the one team, there was little opportunity to learn what others were doing.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider exposing interns to other areas of EY in addition to their main department.

Great company! One of the best to work for.

    Tax Senior (Current Employee)

ProsThe flexibility to work from home or a client and setting your own hours. You just have to make sure that the work gets done.

ConsNot all managers are great. Some are fantastic and will teach you a lot. Others don't care and don't bother coaching you.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet the staff trained on how to look for business development opportunities so they can contribute more to Vision 2020.

Out of touch, lack of innovation, known for their gutter HR tactics

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood place to learn as it has a sink or swim attitude to new starters. You have to keep yourself afloat or you won't stick around.

Not bad if you're young, single and career-focussed, although there are other companies who offer the same opportunities and will appreciate your efforts.

ConsEY is going through a pretty tough time at present, not meeting their ridiculous self-set targets, so aren't replacing staff who leave (and they're leaving in their droves) and are working their current staff to death.

No work:life balance. You will be forced to work all hours and weekends and if that doesn't suit you, HR will bully you into it - not a place for working mothers.

They purport to have great benefits, but when you want to use them, they'll give you reasons why they aren't available (including promotions).

Office politics like I've never experienced.

ProsGet to work with the biggest clients in the market. Continuing education, high-level expectations gives first-class training in leadership and carves you into a true professional.

ConsA lot of work in the busy season is the main challenge, but this is the price at every firm in this industry.
