EY is a great company to work for if you are in the right group.

Tax (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at EY

ProsGood benefits. Nice coworkers. Great place to list on your resume.

ConsIt only takes one bad leader to destroy a group. People sit around and are afraid to leave at night because the group leader is a workaholic. No respect for work life balance. People are rewarded only for long hours and not for results. Those that don't adopt this way of working are labled poor performers.

Advice to Senior ManagementRelax and quit working people to death. People do have lives outside of work. Reward efficiency by letting people leave when their work is done. Lead by example.

A lot to learn...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at EY

Pros- Opportunity to work on large international clients
- Endless learning opportunities

Cons- if you are not the squeaky wheel you do not get the oil
- upper leadership (sr. mgr. and ppeds) run the show and everyone else works like their executive assistants. Can be difficult to get quality work experiences unless you have the right sr. mgr. or partner, which is difficult to find.
- paying approximately 10-15% below market

Advice to Senior Management- increase pay for top performers and those with talent.
- fire incompetent admin and hire people who actually can handle the admin / finance work so that the staff/seniors/managers are not inundated with work that wastes their talent.

Good place to work to develop a strong set of skills in project/people management, leadership, and technical accounting.

Audit Manager (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at EY

ProsErnst & Young is a great place to work in terms of the audit group. The firm is truly a global organization and sets high standards for the quality of the work produced. You can learn a very broad skill set that is transferable including the skills to manage projects/people, leadership skills, technical accounting skills, and even sales/business development skills as you move up the ranks. There is tremendous opportunity within the audit practice and as you move up the ranks, there is more flexibility with the job.

ConsCompensation is a huge issue here, as it may be with the other Big 4 firms. There is always the incentive to jump ship to a client or other private company to have better overall compensation and more work/life balance, especially after having 3-4 years of experience. Work/life balance can be a struggle for a lot of people at the firm if they happen to work with the wrong people or the wrong industry. Overall, people, on average, tend to work more than their counterparts outside of public accounting and this is something that probably will never go away until you make partner.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo a better job of inspiring and motivating your people and communicate more internally on the direction of the firm. It's not always clear as there are so many levels of management (local office, sub area, Americas, global) and they may be potentially saying different things at any given point in time.
