I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital

    Pros

Used to be a somewhat stuffy place to work but has become a bit less formal in recent years. Can periodically wear jeans, Saints jerseys and shirts during football season, etc. A lot of good, caring people work at this hospital,

    Cons

There's a tendency to use comparative data as club without an understanding that most comparative data is junk science. Suppose EJGH fielded a baseball team against other hospitals and for every game EJGH fielded 8 players against the other hospitals who always fielded 9. In spite of losing all of their games, EJ found themselves in the top 5th percentile for productive labor usage in a comparative database. Is this a good thing? It's actually worse than this. We really don't know FOR SURE how many players the other team is fielding or if they're even playing baseball.

Also, some leaders equate excessive time spent at work as virtuous. Raises have been non-existent for several years. Facility is old and is years behind in terms of remodeling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that LEAN initiatives and action plans aren't the answer to everything. Sometimes the 10,000 Gorilla in the room is truly that additional staff, equipment and supplies are needed to improve outcomes. Make certain that expectations are realistic before mandating them. Look internally to your staff for those answers and not to consultants or comparative databases. Otherwise, large chunks of the organization (i.e. staff) get stressed to the breaking point.

I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Doctors are very nice to work with. Location is convenient.

    Cons

The entire executive team of the physician group consists of a group of "cronies" and those that show admiration for the senior physician group staff. Office is toxic, vulture culture. Interviews consist of a bait and switch. Doctors have reported problem employees in clinics however behaviors are rationalized by office cronies. Management is very reactive and biased.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HCA, LCMC, Ochsner, whomever, please take over the management of this organization.

I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Can periodically wear jeans, Saints jerseys and shirts during football season, etc. A lot of good, caring people work at this hospital. I enjoy all the volunteering opportunities that are available. It helps with networking with other employees and simply getting to know other people that contribute to running and operating the hospital.

    Cons

They promise opportunity for growth however there are many stipulations. Applying for a position in another practice, doing virtually the same duties will only pay lateral (the same as you already get paid). Even if the new practice require more or less duties then your previous practice. EJ does not offer merit raises. Sick time accumulated can not be used until are your PTO are used even if you are not at work due to an illness. If a position is posted and its labeled "internal applicants only" this does not mean all those that are currently employed by EJ are eligible to apply. EJ is broken up into many "Call Centers/ entities" and if you are not within that particular call center you are considered an external applicant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The should strongly consider offering merit raises because they will continue to lose great employees.

I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Offered benefits are awesome. So many opportunities for employees for advancement. Senior management are accepting and understanding. Lots of activities and committees employee can involve themselves and their families. Things like the Trunk or Treat for Halloween, the Easter Egg Hunt, the Weight Loss Challenge that employees were able to take part in and was also able to get free access to the Wellness Center. Actually giving employees who did not have a membership access to the gym even if they were not members.

    Cons

The only con is how far we have to park for daytime employees. It not easy when you have 30 lunch and it takes you nearly 10 minutes to get to your vehicle if you wanted to treat yourself by eating out for lunch. I know this is not much of a CON but when you forget your lunch sometimes it can be aggravating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.

    Pros

Team members work together to get the job done.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement. You don't always get a pay raise.
Company always talking about losing money, very depressing. You never know if you are going to get laid off. You are treated as you just another employee, and can be replaced at any time.

If employee's are happy, customer's are happy too.

I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Very good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Backbreaking labor. No rest periods and very difficult to get a lunch break. We are not paid for a 30 minute period for lunch but have no opportunity to take one. You must get approval from the manager if you need to work through lunch. However, there is no way to know ahead of time if you will not have a lunch break due to work responsibilities. So, this is their way of having you work and not get paid. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CHECK ON A PATIENT IF THEY CALL FOR YOU. MANAGEMENT WILL DENY THIS OF COURSE.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better start looking after your employees or you are going to have that nursing shortage again.

I have been working at East Jefferson General Hospital

    Pros

East Jefferson General Hospital is a great place to work. The management there is very fair and there is alot of teamwork in the department where I work. It has a very professional attitude.

    Cons

Considering how long I have been a nurse there the pay is not adequate. When we are short staffed nursing has to do there job along with being a unit secretary, nursing assistant, phlebetomist etc. Whereas the hospital couldn't run without nursing. We are at the bedside with our patients everyday saving lives and I believe nursing as a profession should be paid a higher salary as a whole. This is really not a reflection on East Jefferson but on the nursing profession.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes there seems to be too many people in management being paid too high of a salary and too many unneccessary employees in other departments.
