I worked at Eastern Illinois University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Staff are committed to their students. EIU student teachers are highly motivated and welcomed in Central Illinois schools. Our student teachers are well respected and very committed to education.

    Cons

Like many universities across the country, enrollment is currently declining. This of course means that job security has declined in recent years.

I have been working at Eastern Illinois University part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There is a very helpful staff with many networking opportunities. They provided me with my own office, laptop, and printer.

    Cons

I was given little guidance at first as to my specific job responsibilities, however these were later resolved. This could also be a pro..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have specific job specifications at the beginning.

I have been working at Eastern Illinois University

    Pros

Regardless of what you hear about Illinois, the benefits are still great working here. In addition, the people who work here are kind, caring professionals who will help you if they can.

    Cons

There currently is a hiring freeze and the departmental budgets are very sparse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure departments have enough money to buy adequate supplies to teach the courses.

I worked at Eastern Illinois University full-time

    Pros

Students are working hard to get an education.

    Cons

Underfunded and facing enrollments that have been declining for years. Tied to old ways of doing things and not likely to survive in the long run. Tied up by contracts from multiple unions and unlikely to be able to get out of its own way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take some bold leaps and adopt a lot of innovations very quickly.

I worked at Eastern Illinois University part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Eastern is truly a community within itself. Once immersed in the campus in some way or another, you will immediately find that everyone is extremely welcoming. There is diversity all around and everyone has a different story which actually brings the people closer together. Truly a great place to be. I both attended and worked a few camps there and would not have chosen any other place than EIU.

    Cons

It's not a highly populated area so life other than the campus location is boring.

I worked at Eastern Illinois University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

reasonable salary PLUS tuition reimbursement. Everyone I talked to about this job was satisfied (or better) with the job, duties, and etc.

One of the few schools worldwide that offers masters level graduate assistance-ships.

    Cons

can not pick up any other work while holding this job - you need to focus on your studies and the work they are providing - you probably wont need to>

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it going - good job

I worked at Eastern Illinois University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Its a constantly changing and rewarding experience to help the faculty, staff, and students out with their Computer/IT challenges and daily problems and leave them with a smile and problem solved.

    Cons

There really is not much in the form of a con that I can say about EIU, other than its a state university and your wagea may or may not be what you might make in a corporate atmosphere, but EIU offsets that with a free college education as long as your with them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The biggest thing i can say to the department directors is to remember to run the dept. like a educational faculty not like a private corporation as that does not work in the educational atmosphere.
