I worked at Eastman Chemical as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Eastman has some perks. Not a lot though since the mantra is "Cut cost at all cost". Budgets have been frozen for the next 3 years and although they are scheduled to hire 300 in the next 3 years, no one has the ability to hire unless they weed out those that are there. Sounds like a double edge sword to me.

However, it's the only game in town. People are wanting to get into these doors so badly it's unbelievable. Just a note people: there is life outside of Kingsport. Go experience the world.

    Cons

HR sucks. Comp and benefits need help. Eastman is so busy doing their weeding, they are losing great talent. The acquisition of Solutia has caused changes that won't be healthy in the long run. Those that are either leaving on their own, or have been let go through the numerous reduction in force projects (they have several each year - some voluntary, but most not. Even if voluntary, you're encouraged to leave), are talented people. And you will find that within months, they realize their error, but it's too late. These folks have moved on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. CEO, do you really know what's going on at the lower levels? HR is being ruined and Finance is losing talent. And Treasury?? I guess the good part is that the businesses are still doing well.

    Pros

It was lucky to profit from the natural gas boom. Also as a global company, it may provide a lot of opportunities globally.

    Cons

Close culture. Plenty of politics. Location of its global headquarter. Benefit packages not competitive or motivating.
One year, due to bad performance, the company had a -3% merit increase for everyone, instead of having the gut to make tough decision and make the business leaner and more competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move your global headquarter and hire talents according to their strengths.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay and job security is pretty good in this day and age. The headquarters, and most of the employees reside in a beautiful part of east Tennessee, which is a wonderful place to live. Most employees are very ethical, competent and enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

If you are not willing to brown nose management, don't expect to ever get promoted.
Management does not want to hear the truth, they only want to hear what they believe to be true.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to treat people right and allow people to have a reasonable work/life balance. There are too many veiled threats and direct threats by management indicating that anyone who disagrees with something or is not willing to work all the time, including vacations, just needs to get out of the way and go somewhere else.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Adjectives that apply: friendly, happy, positive and old fashioned. Confrontation and dissent are discouraged. Processes are king, results are an expectation from following the process. If the results are short of expectations and the process was followed, all is well.

    Cons

Think 1984's NewSpeak. The entire organization is expected to use the same script. Compliance with expectations and achieving targeted results are not enough, employees are expected to be fully "committed". Problems and failures are not to be discussed - if the process was followed, all is well in spite of the results. Reports to the contrary are suppressed and the dissenter reprimanded as behaving too negatively. One must remember to be friendly at all times. Location in East TN is completely removed from real world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eastman has locations around the world, de-emphasize Kingsport; bring in new ideas and fresh blood. Change the culture from indecisive group-think to results orientation and encourage out of the box thinking and dissent.

    Pros

salary is ok and coworkers are good people.

    Cons

Benefit package has went downhill for years but will be awful in 2015. Insurance will be ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Moral is at an all time low because they only think about themselves and the stockholders. they forget about the employees that make the products. it keeps getting worse for us. they say they appreciate us but their actions show otherwise. its time to start taking better care of the people that are this companys backbone.

I have been working at Eastman Chemical

    Pros

    Nice location... thats about it...

    Cons

Terrible management. Got laid off after 2 months of being hired. Management did a terrible job in identifying how many employees they actually needed to hire. Most, if not all, the new hires got laid off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan ahead of time and make sure you really need the people you hire. Why go through all the effort of hiring someone (relocation included) and then laying them off? Says alot about your company's culture ... and it's certainly not good.

    I worked at Eastman Chemical

    Pros

Eastman Chemical is, unfortunately, the only game in town in Kingsport TN. They are one of the best (and only) large employers in the area, which isn't saying much.

    Cons

Horrendously inhumane management (they know they have a captive workforce) and poor working conditions make this a company, if at all possible, to avoid. There is a tremendous sense that you are a meaningless pawn if you aren't either management or have a PhD (from the management's chosen schools). The politics of the place are at least as bad as anything on Wall Street, but with a southern flare.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign. If not that, you might try listening to your employees, and at the very least, try not to screw your employees first when your profits go down like you generally do.

I worked at Eastman Chemical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay. Pay is great, but with that comes a price. You work in East TN where there is very little to do for people who are used to the city life or even the suburbs. Additionally, and especially if you work in the plant, there is an inherent danger. There have been a number of casualties from explosions over the history of the company. Hell, a month ago there was an explosion at one of the buildings that sent 3 people to the hospital and blew the windows and doors off the building. Sound fun??? You won't hear about these things in the news much or at Eastman because they keep these things under wraps. They don't want people knowing about the dangerous activities going on inside.

Another pro is if you are related to someone that works at Eastman and ESPECIALLY if your dad or mom are manager level or higher, you are a shoe-in for a position, no matter what your education level or lack of experience may be.

    Cons

    Disclosure on the glassdoor ratings:
Last year the company had a movement to push people to review the company on Glassdoor to boost awareness of who they are and to lure people in to work there. When I say movement, I mean a MOVEMENT. This stuff was blasted all over the internal home page, begging people to review the company and to let people know what its like to work here. The CEO at the time even came out begging people to do it. Well obviously Billy Joe and Judy Ray are going to go on there and say great things for one, they are in a mind numming career coma, and two, out of fear for their lives. I have TWO issues with this glassdoor review push they made.
1). There is nothing wrong with asking your employees to review you and boost your name, but what about the huge number of people that left the company over the past several years because of the horrible culture and working environment. Where was their email asking for them to review the company??? Don't believe me? Go through the pages of reviews for this company and start from the first page, look at the date they start at and go backwards. You will see a pattern. One, two reviews a day, and then you get to sometime early last year and the reviews just STOP. There are maybe a handful of reviews prior to last year. Sound fishy?
    2) READ THEM. You will see a pattern. They start to get repetitive. 1, 2 reviews per day, paragraph or two... kind of blurting the same nonsensical garbage in each review. "Oh the culture is great...5 stars!, etc". If a company is willing to pay someone full time to go on here and write reviews to fluff there rating, what does that tell you about the culture??? Why would anyone want to work for a sleazy scheming company like this? Look at a company like G.E. They have 2500 reviews on glassdoor, meanwhile Eastman has over 500. GE is 500 times the size of Eastman but only has 5 times the amount of reviews?

You might be able to fool your average joe in East TN with this crap but anyone with half a brain can look through this veil and see what is really going on.

Why are they so desperate? Because this company is HURTING right now. 25% of their business is CIGARETTE FILTERS! Have you heard of E-cigs? Guess what? So has Eastman's bottom line. Now all of a sudden, 25% of the company's revenue is going to get smaller and smaller, and they don't have a clue how they are going to make the filter tow business less and less of the contribution to the bottom line. Also, who wants to work for a place that makes cig filters? They won't tell you about it at your schools career fair, I guarantee you that.
    Anyway, moving on...

Politics! Dear god the politics are absurd here.
Benefits were great but are slowly getting slashed to lower costs.
The smells. Hundreds of terrible smells, and they vary by the day. Dead fish smell, vinegar smells, other smells and who knows how much they are harming you.

Do not come here out of school just because the pay is great. Do not make that mistake. Go do something you will enjoy.

I would have given 1 star but even I can't pretend that pay wasn't awesome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your job is to develop your inferiors and work with them, not throw them under the bus. Enough of the politics.
