Lack of Honesty or Communication

Rockefeller Center Photographer/Editor/Sales Representative (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Eastman Kodak as a contractor for less than a year

ProsFun location to Phitograph at Thanksgiving + Christmastime. Fun young crowd to work with and hardworking.

ConsBitter cold (Rockefeller Center) outdoor with little choice of outerwear/uniform. And we were forcef to share coats/hats (unsanitary) during flu season. Very little flexibility once you were outside photographing as far as breaks b/c we were the sales reps/ photographers and photo editors IN the pop-up holiday shop. They promised $12 per hourat the first interview $10.25 at the 2nd interview and had worked their way down to $$7.25 per hour by the end of the second week. I have over 25 years of photography experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in more outerwear and try to hire people that don't threaten the workers like slavers from Eastern Europe.

Watched the slow decline of Kodak

Engineer (Former Employee)
Rochester, NY

I worked at Eastman Kodak full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI loved my colleagues and my work was interesting.

ConsKodak seemed to lack a longsighted view and the persistence to follow research projects.
The numerous layoffs and finally the bankuptcy filing were devastating to employee moral.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's a deep hole to dig out off. Good luck.

Research and Development

Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
Rochester, NY

I have been working at Eastman Kodak full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat benefits, talented workforce. Contrary to popular belief, this company has been at the forefront of many digital technologies. It was one of the leaders in digital still cameras and the PhotoCD program pioneered the display of consumer images on Video and computer devices at high quality from film scans long before such quality was obtainable via digital capture.

ConsThe downfall of much of the pioneering technology is that Kodak never found the right business model to make digital profitable and hence always reverted to it's bread-n-butter Cash Cow - film. This, coupled with an over-funded Research Laboratory possessing an Ivory Tower mentality doomed any significant inroads into consumer digital dominance. Kodak also possesses an arrogant self image as being the World Expert in Image Science. This has perpetuated a "Not Invented Here" attitude allowing many, more nimble, companies to produce cheaper "good enough" products to displace Kodak brands. Bottom line, although Kodak possesses an extraordinarily talented technical workforce, this has never been properly challenged nor held accountable for performance in the marketplace.
Finally, Kodak's hierarchical management structure precludes individual accountability and individual contribution.

Advice to Senior ManagementShed "leadership teams", replace self-appointed title of "Image Science Excellence" and to demonstrate true innovation.

Five years ago things were pretty good. Now it's just getting worse all the time.

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Rochester, NY

I have been working at Eastman Kodak

Pros- The *base* pay is reasonably good. However, there's a variable pay portion talked about in the cons section.
- Great co-workers, friendly atmosphere.
- Surprisingly good job security in my part of the company (Document Imaging).
- Software development feels important despite the size of the company and breadth of products. We're not just slaves tucked away working on internal tools.

Cons- As mentioned above, they switched to a fairly hefty variable pay system in lieu of giving bonuses a few years ago. As part of the chapter 11 filing, they're not paying out any of that variable pay which is a pretty big hit. There's no monetary incentive to perform well anymore.
- Old fashioned, big Corporate America feel.
- Slow pace.
- Terrible tools and development environment.
- Depressing mood after chapter 11 filing.
- Impossible to get promoted to higher wage grades, despite several years of great reviews and the fact that I'm below all of my peers.

Advice to Senior ManagementShake things up! Modernize this place and lose some of the oppressive Corporate America feeling. Speed up the development process to make it more fun and interesting. Hiring some kids straight out of college would help. Get rid of Perez!
