Fine if you're at a legacy Eaton plant. If you're an acquisition, not so much.

I worked at Eaton (less than an year)

    Pros

Good professional development. Decent benefits package. Competitive salary. There is a heavy focus on continuous improvement. There are many sites across the country that you can relocate to fulfill career goals.

    Cons

Acquisitions are hung out to dry. Former Cooper sites have an identity crisis. The legacy employees tend to look down on former Cooper and other acquisition sites. At my plant, supervisors were given too many outside projects to adequately supervise there area(s).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you aren't going to take real interest in a business, don't buy it! It's bad for the employees to see Eaton come in, hang a sign on the building, and not give any support.

I worked at Eaton full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Only one I can think of: In my experience there, people displayed good behavior. It was refreshing to experience that.

    Cons

Eaton is gradually changing its porfolio mix from old biz to new biz. Depending on what business unit you are working in, future could be very uncertain. Company does not like to lose money, ever. Management will cut staff or pay very quickly to avert that.

    Pros

Values, nice people. Leadership model. People are very helpful. Lots of processes that help guide newcomers. Multi product lines that people can move and learn.

    Cons

Multiple levels of politics- try to please the king. Too many dumb Short term decisions that have impacted future. Poor choice of leaders that make bad decisions-too many executive bullies with control issues. No development of people. People over reaction and make short sighted decisions, no creative thinking or acting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be Future focused not short term. Develop current people instead of focused on outside hiring. Address the senior executive issues, get real people, not out of touch, reactive, over paid bullies.

    Pros

Decent Pay and referral bonuses are offered if you refer someone for an open position. A very Ethics and safety driven company.

    Cons

Benefits are Bad, and Work Life Balance doesn't exist. Management does not seem to value employees unless they get a little brown on their nose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Know your employees they are more than a machine. To the site manager, he should try looking the employees in the eyes not look past or through them. They deserve that much!
Promoting people into supervisory positions with out guidence that has never supervised a person in their life is a bad idea. Try training or mentoring with someone that is a good supervisor. There are only a couple at this site but you could utilize them before they either quit or retire. Most don't have any idea how to supervise with respect to get respect back. It's pretty bad.

    Pros

Safe Heaven for Underperformers ( Lot of Sand Bagging in Goals) provided you along good with your manager. Moderately competitive Remuneration to Market . If you are afraid of taking onus of your decisions , best place to work as all decisions are either top driven or are made over collectively.

    Cons

Leadership here is busy in promoting himself/herself , so do not bother them with your issues
If you are a domain expert , chances of your decision getting implemented are as strong as others in your team who do not know much because "calibration" is the DNA of Eaton's Decision Making
Undue Focus on Employee Satisfaction Index and Managerial Effectiveness , hence very tough life for Manager of People. You can not afford to rate your subordinate for underperformance as Manager of Managers shall make the buck stop at you as his numbers of ESI & ME need to be correct.
Skip Levels for MOP's are only for the record , actually they are mot meant for you. Never believe the Ombudsman Process , they are there only to facilitate your Leaders' Motives

I worked at Eaton full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great inspiring CEO.
This company provide opportunities to learn with EBS (Eaton Business System) and best in class practices.
    Reasonable compensation.
Good growth and expansion at Electrical sector.

    Cons

HR practices are different for non US employees. One example is travel policy. US employees travel business and people in developing countries travel coach for the same meeting and travel distance. There is a worldwide travel policy, but there is an addendum local HR made.
Top career opportunities for functional areas (OPEX, SCM, Engineering, HR) are restricted to US employees because these positions are in US, relocation benefit is very restricted and recruiters in US protect their teams naturally.
Too much politic in medium-high levels.
Lack of investments or right investments in some business causes lack of opportunities for people and increase the competition and bad organizational climate.
Regional Leadership (GMs and Directors - out of USA - where I worked) are not reliable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a look on what regional top leadership is doing with middle management in other regions.
Don't trust on what Regional HR, Regional President and his direct reports tell you about middle management.
Don't trust the Employee Survey results only, because it has a bias from manufacturing employees heavy weight on the survey.
Either invest heavily or sell Vehicle business. Competent people don't deserve to work for a loser business.
