Great line-staff, decent supervisors and managers, quirk senior management

Manager (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Edgewood Center for Children and Families full-time

ProsPros: strong mission, excellent training, competitive wages, strong H&W benefits, great way to gain work experience if you care about kids with special needs and are flexible.

ConsCons: calcified management approaches, the repeat rehire of an interim CEO with no relevant experience beyond Board connections drove many good senior employees away, Sunset District location not ideal for those who rely on mass transit

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the Board hires J.D. as CEO for a third time all bets are off...

Fulfilling but really difficult work experience.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Edgewood Center for Children and Families

ProsThe work itself can be incredibly rewarding. The school and residential staff are very supportive, and try their best to make the work environment positive. Everyone there wants to be there and help people.

ConsUpper management are so far removed from what goes on. Pay is not anywhere close to what it should be for how difficult the work is.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay your employees more! Stop taking extended vacations and boost the moral of the staff you need the most by giving them better benefits and a raise!

A valuable community service, but hampered by inept leadership and mismanagement.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Edgewood Center for Children and Families full-time for more than 3 years

ProsProvides the necessary support services and environment to children and families dealing with difficult situations. Outreach services to the surrounding area and local schools are a cornerstone of the organization.

ConsThe long term viability of the organization is in question due to severe mismanagement of funds. There are little to no pay raises within the organization unless you are a member of management. The organization struggles to attract and keep quality employees due to agency salaries not reflecting current Bay Area COLA.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be a top down review of agency directors and management due to poor decision making and questionable spending practices. Staff positions are cut so the agency can hire more management or afford more vacation time for themselves. The agency has seen a staff turn over of 60% since 2010 and this continues to be a problem. All the veteran staff/management with over 10 or more years experience have left due to the agency deteriorating under current leadership.

A leader in family and child services. Good support and great experience.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Edgewood Center for Children and Families full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThere's a long history of growth and services in the communities. A lot of opportunity for career advancement or connecting to different inter-agency jobs. Beautiful campus. True wrap around services and resources. More stable and organized than most non-profits. Really good training and management. Employees given opportunity to give feedback and shape management.

ConsA lot of turn-over. Corporate-like non-profit structure. Can be very oriented towards productivity versus quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease listen to employee feedback and needs. Stay committed to team development and employee/consumer satisfaction as indicators of success more than the bottom dollar and productivity.

Great Mission, Inept Leadership

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Edgewood Center for Children and Families full-time for more than a year

ProsThe staff are committed to the mission of the organization. They work very hard, and genuinely care about the outcomes for clients.

ConsThe leadership has no idea what is going on. Leaders make lots of money, while the people working with children are making $13 an hour. Lots of injuries.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvolve the staff. Pay them what they deserve. Stop putting old business friends into positions of power and firing people that are there for the right reasons.

"Over The Edge" support group forming for employees traumatized at Edgewood Center for Children and Families.

Supervisor (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Edgewood Center for Children and Families

ProsThe mission is to help abused and neglected children and the therapists/ teachers/ interns do an outstanding job relating to these children and trying to help them heal and learn and grow. The salaries are decent and lunch is free and often very good. The training is extensive and excellent.

ConsThe work is extremely traumatic for employees, many who must hold out-of-control children on the floor while they
rage and cry and sometimes bleed. The caseload for the employee along with the "paperwork", the "care team meetings", and the case management responsibilities, overwhelm the employees and they have little time to relate to the child's family and/community.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce caseloads and build in additional supports for stress reduction. Provide supervision which helps staff reduce and cope with their own trauma and is not critical, judgmental, demanding. Perhaps senior management has compassion fatigue? Listen to staff when they say they are overloaded and respond with appropriate and effective action. Staff wellbeing needs to be a priority in this stressful environment of extreme acting out of children who are in terrible pain.
