    Pros

Staff are very dedicated and qualified. There is a big emphasis on research, on implementing evidence-based interventions. Strong emphasis on local partnerships in international projects. You can feel proud to work here. Always something new happening.

    Cons

On an international project, lots of pressure at times. It seems senior management of the project do nothing but work, putting in long, long hours. At times it can feel the project is valued at the expense of staff. You need to set your own boundaries and stick to them to achieve work/life balance.

    Pros

Really smart, nice, people, friendly atmosphere.

    Cons

People get promoted and then don't do a good job in the more senior posts. So leadership isn't as good as it could be.

    Pros

Education Development Center is the fiscal agent for numerous grants for important work in the education of children nationally and internationally, particular working in the area of STEM. Having a sense of mission adds to the good feeling for the work performed. Staff is generally supportive and encouraging. The work/life balance is good.

    Cons

There can be a relentless focus on spending money so that EDC obtains the maximum IDC for their administrative costs. This can be very off-putting. To be fair, funds awarded need to be spent, but this pressure to spend can mean that funds are not always spent in the best possible way. One other issue is that outstation staff are sometimes forgotten, though they have made some efforts in that regard.

    Advice to Management

Discussions of spending should focus, at least somewhat, on the WORK being done. Finance meetings often contained no questions or encouragement regarding this aspect.

    Pros

Good benefits, flexible schedule, occasional exposure to interesting ideas/projects, opportunity for travel, some interesting colleagues, good mission.

    Cons

Condescending colleagues, culture of mediocrity, staid/older management, inefficient, poorly organized, overwhelmingly female, poor opportunities for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire overqualified people for administrative positions. Hire qualified people for specific tasks, not jacks of all trades. Improve non-project related support, i.e. communications, tech, programming, etc. Make sure people get on board with new tools - so much time is wasted looking up and repeating things that everyone should know already.

    Pros

Good cause, flexible work schedule and locations within the office to work from, respect from fellow colleagues, a lot of freedom in what you want to work on/learn about

    Cons

Hard to move up the chain unless you're age 40+, unreliable work as most positions are for limited contracts

    Pros

EDC was founded in the late 60's with a primary focus reforming science education, but has since developed a strong reputation for its work as a leading program developer, technical assistance provider and progressive agent of change in almost every area of human services both domestically and internationally. Holistic, constructivist and student centered Math and Science programs for students in grade K-12 continue to be a as well as out of school programs for populations that are traditionally under served and under represented in the STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] domains. EDC is a relaxed and informal place to work. It is almost entirely project-based, giving educators considerable control over their own research agenda or area of professional work -- without the burden of teaching and publication associated with institutes of higher ed.

    Cons

Projects are largely funded by competitive grants from federal and state government agencies, so it can be difficult to maintain continuity in any particular stream of work as priorities and political support vary at the federal and state level. As others have noted, management styles can vary widely and large jumps up the professional ladder are rare. Annual pay increases are modest, so even after many years at the company, salary is inordinately determined by the starting level. So negotiate high at the beginning.

    Advice to Management

Diversify funding sources. More transparency in overall policy development
