I have been working at Education Development Center, Inc. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

EDC was founded in the late 60's with a primary focus reforming science education, but has since developed a strong reputation for its work as a leading program developer, technical assistance provider and progressive agent of change in almost every area of human services both domestically and internationally. Holistic, constructivist and student centered Math and Science programs for students in grade K-12 continue to be a as well as out of school programs for populations that are traditionally under served and under represented in the STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] domains.

EDC is a relaxed and informal place to work. It is almost entirely project-based, giving educators considerable control over their own research agenda or area of professional work -- without the burden of teaching and publication associated with institutes of higher ed.

    Cons

Projects are largely funded by competitive grants from federal and state government agencies, so it can be difficult to maintain continuity in any particular stream of work as priorities and political support vary at the federal and state level.

As others have noted, management styles can vary widely and large jumps up the professional ladder are rare. Annual pay increases are modest, so even after many years at the company, salary is inordinately determined by the starting level. So negotiate high at the beginning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Diversify funding sources. More transparency in overall policy development

    Pros

Smart people, very flexible work schedule

    Cons

No real direction for those starting out their career. Everyone higher up has a Ph.D and you can't do a whole lot if you don't have one. Office culture is very dull and nothing exciting ever happens. If you're looking to advance your skills and develop your career you should look elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Develop training and learning opportunities.

I worked at Education Development Center, Inc. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Thoughtful, smart, professional colleagues. Interesting project work on important, timely topics. Opportunities for travel if working nationally or internationally.

    Cons

Very little room for advancement. Culture of constantly chasing money (needed in today's climate, but frustrating to have it be so pervasive).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know people entering the organization and see what will keep them engaged. EDC used to have a reputation of compensating well and having a nice culture supporting work/life balance. Riding on that wave may be over - consider what the EDC of the future can and should be - especially for staff who are invested in the success of the organization.

I have been working at Education Development Center, Inc. full-time

    Pros

Benefits are great, most people are friendly, good work-life balance

    Cons

Some of the senior-level staff can be unapologetically condescending. Obviously if you have a higher stress job, you need to learn how to manage your stress without taking it out on junior-level staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please avoid having high-horse moments, because they are not fun to be around.

I have been working at Education Development Center, Inc. full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work at a mission-driven organization with a lot of smart people. The work/life balance is great-- my supervisor and colleagues are always understanding if you need to work at home because of a sick child or need to leave early to catch a school play. Great collaborative environment and lovely building and space. High quality work is expected and completed, but in a supportive atmosphere.

    Cons

Because projects rely on grant and contracts funding, you're not always sure about long-term job security. And not always clear what's happening on the development front to keep people funded. There could be more cross-division collaboration as many projects across divisions could learn from each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more information to employees about what specifically is being done or could be done to sustain or increase funding. Allow more opportunities for cross division collaboration.

    Pros

Very intelligent and diverse population; you won't feel out of place. Passionate about what they do, the company takes it's mission seriously. Nice place to work

    Cons

Because of decreased government funding there have been layoffs and no increases. Can be a little old fashioned in their processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
