I worked at Ektron full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ektron would let you progress as far as you were willing to work to achieve. With little exception, I found nothing in my way of career growth. When they trusted your abilities you were given autonomy and freedom. I would consider working for Ektron again if the right situation came along.

    Cons

A lot of very young employees. Some of which are not career mature and expect to be treated as brilliant little thinkers. And at times there were too many cooks in the pot so to speak and we lacked consistent direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Team building programs either in or out of work. My current company does a lot with Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.

I worked at Ektron full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I was able to learn a lot during my time at Ektron. My VP of Marketing was an excellent teacher and he led the marketing team through a transformation that made us one of the best performing groups in the company. Ektron offers a good work/life balance and the location is great for people who live in Southern New Hampshire.

    Cons

Where to start? Inept leadership. Non-existent culture (sorry the ping pong table doesn't count). Lack of a cohesive product strategy. A sales organization without any sales people to do the selling. Worst of all, Ektron cannot recruit or retain talent. The amount of turnover at Ektron is astounding especially in Marketing.

Mostly I'd say Ektron has become toxic. Few outside of the executive team have any faith in the leadership. The company president rarely leaves his office. Ektron is now seemingly being run by its outside venture investors who are unusually involved in the day-to-day management of the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is too late to provide any actionable advice for Ektron management, but I hope they have learned a valuable lesson for their future jobs. Invest in people and culture first.

A lot is hidden beneath the surface

    Pros

The best reason to work here is if you can't do the technical work well, and can be pleasant and talk very well, they will promote you to the highest levels in engineering. It does not matter what your background is, or whether you majored in English Literature, or if you learnt how to instantiate a class a year ago, in 6 months, you would be Senior Architecture Lead or some such highly titled position.

The only company where you can insult more capable, senior engineers who have given the company multiple hundred thousand dollar customers, and you have more power than them. Enjoy life to the fullest, while drinking alcohol openly within company premises and getting every opportunity to shine with the least amount of accountability.

    Cons

If you are an experienced engineer and good at what you do, they will just keep you in that role forever no matter how much you contribute to the company.
The really good, technically talented people have left because of the above.
Humiliation is a part of your life. Those who have remained have mastered the art of compromising and shutting their eyes to the daily insults.
They will never have a crucial conversation with you. See the book in Amazon about why this is important. In fact, they will hardly have a conversation with you till you resign.
Many employees have resigned and then stayed back because that was the only way to get a raise
Engineering is neglected at the cost of every other department.
More support people that engineers for some product area. For example, one area may have five support people and one engineer to handle hundreds of screaming customer calls.
After my experience with the HR here, I believe the only agenda for HR in any company in this part of the world is to help the company better exploit and abuse employees as much as possible.
I read a review about an employee who loves this place so much he comes early to office. Let me clarify that in my three years here, not one employee reached office early on a daily basis. In fact, the only guy who used to do that was insulted recently and left. He was instrumental in getting a lot of customers to stay on with Ektron yet he was never appreciated or even felicitated by anyone.

Potential success drowned by management stagnation

I worked at Ektron full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The office is a great location in NH, there are not a lot of technology companies in NH of this size so that's a great plus.

My pay is right in line with other offers in the area. I had no complaints about my personal compensation.

You might have the fantastic opportunity to work with and visit some of the most well known companies in the US. Depending on your role, travel is a possibility.

Flexible hours. You are able to run errands. Go drop your car off for an oil change etc without anyone breathing down your neck.

    The people.

Alcohol consumption, although probably technically not permitted, is widespread and accepted.

    Cons

For many years employees followed the carrot. We were lead to believe that the company was in a much better position in the market than it actually is. While working there, you believe the story, you believe the hype. "Ektron is finally going to hit it big time", "we will revolutionize the market". When you finally step outside the door and take off your rose tinted glasses you see it for what it is. It's a company desperately trying to keep up with multiple fast moving dynamic successful companies building well conceptualized, engineered, marketed and documented products.

Ektron lacks a true innovator within it's management. During a specific project we were literally instructed to "build it how XXX does it". That was the specification for a feature. Now I have no problem replicating a feature of another product if it's within the law, but where's the innovation you're touting? Whats going to spark this revolution?

I've never seen so much wasted talent as I did working there. Working on poorly planned features, with no specs, no design and short time frame. Everyone did they best with what they had. The company could have been successful if they had utilized and appreciated the engineering team appropriately.

Since leaving, I've witnessed customers and other developers trying to use the system. Initially I thought it was a one of usability issue, a one off bug. But after a couple of weeks I began to feel bad for them. I witnessed the frustration and the annoyance. I felt ashamed to be partly responsible for what they were experiencing. "Why do you have to..." "oh, you have to click here, then there, then go back here.... yeah i know it's strange, that's just how it is"..... "i have to do this every time?" "...it's a bug in Ektron." That's what happens with a skeleton staff of engineers spread too thin and literally no product management or project management until 2013. No project or product management for years. This explains the poorly thought out, missed features and major inconsistencies throughout the product and not the quality or competency of the engineers.

No training or investment in skills. No career planning.

Alcohol consumption, although probably technically not permitted, is widespread and accepted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Double the size of the engineering team and invest in project managers. Give these project managers and the product managers freedom to do their job. Identify and remove a few staff members who have been elevated beyond the capabilities.

I have been working at Ektron full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Because Ektron is a smaller-sized company, my contributions have more of a direct impact on our success. The people I work with are excellent and professional; they are the best! I have creative input and license because they trust me to do a great job. I often wake up early to get to work because I want to. The location in Nashua is great for my commute and also puts me in reach of anything I need or want (such as errands at lunch time). I also think that adjustments to the business in the past couple of years have been very positive, and the revenues are demonstrating that we are on a great track.

    Cons

Sometimes, it has felt like flying crop-dusting (flying by the seat of our pants) but over the last couple of years or so, Ektron has steadily lifted and become airborne (initiating better, more predictable controls) and is growing to another level. Small companies often have ups and downs, but Ektron is making the right decisions and growing and won't be small for much longer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep hiring the right people with talent and integrity.

I have been working at Ektron full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Ample chances to advance and improve as my own career exemplifies... going on 14 years now.
Amazing vision and top level direction on where Ektron is going as a company based on past success and customer needs... always building new products, fast paced, exciting technology that typically leads the industry.

    Cons

Change happens fast and the ability to adapt as quickly is a requirement for success.
Up tempo requires commitment and loyalty, must be "all in" to prosper.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, Special kudos to a few departments. New support leadership that launched the portal for customer self service. New agile engineering processes running at a high velocity. Strong go to market plans through partners and the direct sales team.
