    Advice to Management

Don't look for simple answers; invest in the future

    Pros

Good technical work, good benefits, excellent bonus package, Good work environment.

EMD has very good products to work on,
The company focussing on next generation products to regain the last market share, most of the colleagues are very helpful and subject matter experts. With Big brother Caterpillar the company modifying the existing products to suite for current market needs. The company parts sales are good.
EMD is getting to new markets , so far it had Great success in new markets. Involve with FRA and AAR comities.

Company 401k match is excellent. 100% match up to 6 %.

    Medical care is good ,
Dental and vision care is decent, but require more benefit coverage .

Health premium is nominal and better than industry average.

Bonus package is excellent this year received close to 20% of base pay.

Free lunches during meetings . Potlucks are good, employee life event (marriage , birth of child ) celebrations .

    Cons

Company has to invest on the improving quality process, product reliability .
Software development process is total chaos.
There is no process for hardware development .
No effective configuration management, change management process .

    Engine development group totally disconnected.

Each group has their own process (own way inside head ) to execute the work .

The company does not have single process or work procedure or work instructions documented .

day one you will be assigned with work .
You need to be a go getter .

Old GM era employees has lot knowledge hidden
In their brains , nothing documented on paper .

What ever you are ,you will be rated as meet expectations during the appraisal .

Hikes are nominal as per market 3 to 6 % on every year .

    Advice to Management

Improve the current engineering development process , focus more on bringing cutting edge products on to locomotives.

Train resources well with advanced simulation technologies, quality and development process.

Focus on documenting best practices ,
Help groups to interact with each other ,
    Share knowledge among teams .

Build positive energy among teams .

Encourage more employees to file patents .
    Improve the product reliability ,

invest on being latest development tools.

You need to train resources well to compete with your competitors GE and Siemens .

Improvise appraisal process . Current process not suitable for engineers .

Improvise the working environment I mean facilities . Cafeteria is horrible, improvise.

This company best suited to be part of caterpillar engineering group , not under the progressrail management as nature of work differs with progressrail.

    Pros

It is a big company. It has various benefits for employees. The employees are involved in a Union. They give out bonuses from time to time.

    Cons

The department where I work at Electro-Motive Diesel engages in favoritism by the supervisors. Advancement seems by favoritism and who you know and how good you are at behind kissing. More diversity is needed in upper management positions.

    Advice to Management

Less favoritism and more eligibility as far as advancement, at least in my department Electrical Assembly. More diversity is definitely needed because there is not a single African-American among four supervisors, at least in my department.

    Pros

Plenty of traveling opportunities to almost anywhere in the world
Engineering is very technical and requires a wide range of skill sets. Not many companies require this much from their engineers which builds skill sets that can help with future job prospects.
    Good benefits from Caterpillar
Very cool product to work on

    Cons

Everybody is overworked, the longer you've been there and the more you know the harder they work you.
Not a single person seems to actually like working there.
HUGE disconnect with upper management. Nobody can figure out what the longterm strategy is. Upper management for some reason keeps CAT away as much as possible.
Little employee recognition. They can care less about your personal life and commitments.
Very constricted resources which is the reason for the demanding skill sets required.
Very little emphasis on R&D. Not an innovative company. They only do what the customer immediately wants for the short term and are constantly playing catch up to the competition.
No opportunity for advancement within the company.
Poor teamwork, there's little communication and everybody wants to blame their problems on somebody else.

    Advice to Management

Provide opportunities for your employees to grow.
Stop cutting back costs and invest in facilities, R&D and employees so you can stop playing catch up to the competition.
    Stop demanding unrealistic timelines.
A $50 gift card to Jewel doesn't make your employees feel appreciated.
Address the the poor EOS results that have been going on for the past few years.

    Pros

Decent and fair pay, seems like the standard corporate environment, people are nice and friendly, decent hours and work load. I would go back if needed a job.

    Cons

Garbage must be taken out by yourself which in my opinion is a huge setback on productivity compared to having a cleaner come in and take out all the garbage bags in the morning like my current company. There are no restaurants nearby unless you drive for a couple miles, food from the vending machines should not even be eaten.

  8. Caterpillar Company that does not comply with Mental Health Parity Law or the Affordable Care Act for Autism Coverage.

    Pros

    Medication management is typically covered.
Health Benefits are good as long as you don't have any mental health concerns or children with ADHD, anxiety/depression, or any Autism Spectrum diagnosis requiring individual therapy, group therarpy, or diagnostic testing.

    Cons

Mental Health Carve Out from BCBS to BHS. Medical Insurance is a PPO with no pre-authorization required. Mental Health is carved out to Behavioral Health Systems out of Alabama. BHS is a managed care provider with total oversight of any mental health services. All therapies previously covered under BCBS PPO were denied under BHS. Autism is not a covered diagnosis even though Illinois State Law requires coverage.

    Advice to Management

Comply with Mental Health Parity Law and Illinois State Law requiring Autism to be a covered diagnosis. Demonstrate Caterpillar Values of Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Commitment through your policies rather than just as talking points at each quarterly meeting.

    Pros

They HAD good benefits, but slowly they are getting cut out.

    Cons

Pay raises are almost nothing. You get promoted without company checking other current employees. Benefits got cut while deductibles keep rising. BCBS pays only so much, then the difference gets billed to you. Management likes to go on a firing spree. Poor planning by upper management cutting tier 4 has caused us to lose market share to GE, costing a lot of employees.

    Advice to Management

    Time for new management.

    Pros

    The Non-Management are good people

    Cons

This is not the same company as when GM had it. Attempting to survive the management, they like to fire people. The last engine they designed was so bad that they had to sell the rights to the Chinese, cheap ! The Chinese are now very angry. It seem as though everybody there is looking for another company to work for.
If you happen to be a consumer, Know this: The new engine they are currently attempting to develop is junk also, its too large for your average locomotive, and there is no room to work on it. Plus, it not very reliable, (breaks down a lot.... a whole lot).

    Advice to Management

Don't try to give them advice, they won't listen and you'll get fired for it. As saying about advise goes: " A wise man doesn't need it, and a fool won't heed it. Wisdom is a language that the management there does not understand...
