Advice to Senior Management
Cheap labor is not always quality labor
Pros

Cons

Advice to Senior Management
hire contractors as employees faster
Pros
Challenging work environment
Fun people
Cons
Poor senior management & executive leadership during my time at EDS.
Unsatisfactory opportunities to advance in the company and within in my team.
Advice to Senior Management
Think of the grunts who get things done
Pros
EDS seem to invest heavily in technology, facilities, structured training and education. There was ample opportunity to move to new roles in the company.
Cons
Often you get on a project that was setup for failure and then instead of adding resources to it they seem to just work people on the project to death.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to get the dead wood out of the company and look for people that are solid workers and help them have life/work balance.
Pros
flexible work scedule. Decent benefits package
Cons
salary is way below standard for IT jobs in this area. Negotiate high because you will not see a pay raise... Performance evaluation process is ridiculous and will not net a salary increase.
Advice to Senior Management
better communication and better pay for employees
Pros
EDS before the buyout was a pretty decent place to work. I was allowed to pursue opportunities outside my technical training; you were empowered to solve problems without a lot of obstacles as it related to customer service. The management team balanced the needs of the customers with that of the employees. Everything was not always about money and earnings per share. EDS tried to participate in numerous community events or supported their employees who volunteered for different community events. The corporations was a true member of its community.
Cons
The downside came when it was bought out by a hardware company. That purchase along with the subsequent economic downturn resulted in thousands of people being let go. That was expected but what was not expected was the resulting salary reductions of the remaining staff. The lack of effective communication between the senior management and staff. The cloud of fear that hung over the workplace because no one knew which department was next to be let go. Also, there never seem to be a succession plan in place once positions were eliminated. One week you would be working on a project with someone and the next week you cannot locate the person because they had been let go and there was no one there to pick up that part of the project.
Advice to Senior Management
Balance the needs of the stockholders with that of the employees because it is the employees who make a company successful. EDS product were its people, their talent, and the ability to meet or exceed customers' expectations.
Pros
It was a place where employees were recognized and rewarded...happy people made for happy customers and a viable, profitable business
Cons
it isn't that way any more (especially since acquisition by HP). Bottom line is all that matters. Customer and people thrown out the window
Advice to Senior Management
Go back to the grassroots wisdoms. Taking care of your people (and consequently your business and customer) never goes out of style. Look at the big picture and not just the next quarter
Pros
Big organization provides options to move around locations
Cons
They prefer contractors to bring cost down. Contractors mostly underperform and get away with it
Advice to Senior Management
Please focus on value to clients not just on cost cutting
Pros
Great co-workers that help you when needed and understand and help with your frustration at work. Service juggernaut that had large accounts which meant there was plenty of work.
Cons
Frustrating compensation and promotion hurdles. Plenty of work meant that you were doing more than plenty of work. Work life balancing act was difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay more attention to your people managers and whether they use nepotism in picking and choosing employees for promotions and opportunities.
Pros
Opportunity for International Experience was a great plus.
Cons
One of the biggest concerns I had working at EDS was the fear of Layoff. EDS was known for doing workforce reductions.
Advice to Senior Management
One of the things I would have offered if asked was that the Leaders at EDS try to move leaders slated for layoff into roles they may have had prior experience.
