Pros
Lots of opportunities for different technical area in the company, even project management, and financial areas of the company. If you are a top performer you at times are rewarded
Cons
Horrible management and expectations of employees time, bad work life balance. Management will not in anyway tell a customer no or back their employees when they say no. The morale in the company is very bad due to how the leadership addresses the employees. They will say no more cuts are coming then three months later work force reductions come through. The slacker employees benefit while the harder working top performers just get more work piled on as the slackers can't be trusted to complete anything.
Advice to Senior Management
Resign and let a management team take over who doesn't believe in cut all you can to meet shareholder expectations is the correct way to run a company.
Pros
The team atmosphere. Most teams that I was a part of we all watched out for one another. We would take time to help a teammate if we saw they were struggling with an issue.
Cons
The extremely long hours. There never appeared to be enough people to do all the work that the client expected. Non-existent training programs to modernize your skillset. Sure they offered online classes, but you needed to do these on your own time. When you are already working 55 to 65 hours a week, it becomes a little difficult to work this into your schedule.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your subordinates. They are closer to the action and they usually have a pretty good read on their situations. Be serious about re-training your workers just don't give it lip service. Above all else, be honest amd fair.
Pros
If in Detroit or Plano, plenty of opportunities to control your career.
Good balance of work/life.
Great people to work with, some of the most decent, trustworthy folks I know. If it weren't for the people I work with daily, the job would be unbearable.
Cons
Poor upper management.
If you're not in Detroit or Plano, job advancement/opportunities are slim.
Lack of vision from managment.
Advice to Senior Management
Figure out a way to maximize employee knowledge. So much knowledge and experience is within EDS but no effective way of tapping this information is available and usefull. Eliminate BAD project managers, don't just shuffle the deck and send them on elsewhere. Too much dead weight that provides no benefit to the bottom line.
Pros
Good resources for self-paced training and personal development. Multiple opportunities for different career paths. Very knowledgeable, hardworking, and sharp people working for EDS. Large portfolio of clients that provide opportunities to gain experience in multiple industries. Industry experience is possible anywhere from manufacturing, financial, government, communications, to health care.
Cons
Not a growth company. Salaries for long time employees may not always be competitive with existing market conditions. EDS senior management direction is to eliminate the "Alternate Work Arrangements", which allowed employees to work from home full-time or part-time . . . so much for being a "Green" company.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't sell out your employees for the sake of the HP acquisition of EDS.
Pros
If there are job opening, you can change your career on a dime. If you want to live somewhere else and still do the same job, you can do so.
Cons
Since work can be done remotely, that means that most of the technical jobs are going overseas to cheap (not better or faster) labor.
Advice to Senior Management
Outsource your job to India and see how well it gets done.
Pros
the job satisfaction of doing a good job and the money...
Cons
The lack of recognision by senior management
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate more with ALL staff
Pros
Good people to work with. Opportunity to work on a wide variety of technology.
Decent pay and benefits.
Cons
Too many processes. Once a process is introduced it can't seem to be changed. The company can't admit when something isn't working and will not put in much effort to make it work. It is more of a 'go with the flow' type of company.
Advice to Senior Management
They should have 'technical' people to doing 'technical' work. Basically, they need to utilize their resources more wisely.
Pros
The opportunities are great if you have the network.
Cons
Leadership, communication, pockets of network where others get left out
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate
Pros
very flexible in allowing work from home or non standard work schedules when needed.
Cons
Career advancement is slow, not much flexibility in how assignments are completed. Too much buraucracy. Raises come very slowly.
Advice to Senior Management
Compensate more actively for quality work.
Pros
Flexibility, telecomute, There's a lot of tools you can use to advance your learning
Cons
Too burecratic, it's in the business of IT outsourcing so depending on project pipeline, if they don't have projects sometimes you could be out of a job. Very insecure.
Advice to Senior Management
Come up with a strategy to reuse resources efficiently. Now everything is driven by projects.
