I worked at Elgin Community College full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful company. The assistant director and director of the financial aid department are amazing, understanding and when there is a complaint they talk to you first. The president would come down once a week to say hi and remembered everyone's name.

    Cons

The students can be very rude when it comes to federal aid and are a lot to handle. The HR department is slow and really difficult to work with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, you are what made this company so hard to leave.

I have been working at Elgin Community College (more than 3 years)

    Pros

In light of all the things that cause a great deal of stress, failure, infra-fighting, unhappiness, and delivering poor products, the college hangs on to old ways of doing business when jobs were secure, the school made money, employees were a caring community. The employees are in a state of perpetual denial, which actually makes it a nice environment for students. There are much worse places to work. ECC has, at the very least, its union contracts (unfortunately it desperately needs them).

    Cons

#1 problem is lack of resources
There are not enough qualified people in management
    Hiring process is a joke
Personal and political agendas dominate—partly due to lack of upward mobility, and partly due to greedy upper management and those who have been there too long. You must be aggressive and take advantage of people to get anywhere.
Inability to adapt and change to meet current needs/trends of students today (very common now in colleges)
    Poor quality control
Systemic problems and errors remain unresolved
Needs of employees are poorly addressed causing much angst.
Siloed environment results in poor communication and extreme inefficiency (lots of waster here).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Must you be reminded it isn't about your success but the success of the college? Dare to stop the madness, and do what you were hired to do rather than waxing your personal accomplishments. You should not foster a fend-for-yourself environment. If this college is going to survive, you will need to contribute more and take less.

I have been working at Elgin Community College full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great, time off is more than you can imagine. Pay is really good compared to other schools in the area.

    Cons

There are many silos at ECC. No one talks to each other. The hiring process is atrocious! Be prepared to wait for 4-6 months to get hired. It is a very passive aggressive atmosphere that makes it difficult to get things accomplished. It seems like the loud mouthed problem people get what they want as opposed to the people that actually care and work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please care more about your employees. Break down the silos and start focusing on what is important.

I have been working at Elgin Community College full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement, benefits were outstanding and fridays off in the summer were wonderful.

    Cons

No one gets fired for the most part in these union environments so the staff are crabby, territorial and set in their ways. People talk very harshly to each other and I felt like I worked with a lot of instability. It seems like no matter what the situation if you confront this behavior it will just get turned on you. Better to talk to no one and keep your head down....which is sad, not really my dream work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not really sure why there is mandatory trainings for so many things and not for leadership growth. Also, if you don't want to manage and don't like people, maybe find an opportunity where so many people don't report to you. More importantly, people spend a lot of hours at this place, don't contribute to a negative work environment, work to grow and support each other. Putting down others is a true sign of your own insecurities. Put your teams together, don't rip them apart.

    Pros

Good environment, great people to work with. Never a dull moment when working with all of the students and staff

    Cons

Some times higher up employees would be busy when an issue need to be escalated. Students sometimes demanded help instead of asked for it

I have been working at Elgin Community College part-time

    Pros

ECC makes an effort to have strong teaching, so it's a great place to be an instructor. The Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning offers lots of opportunities for professional growth.

    Cons

Low pay for adjuncts, but on par with what other colleges pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider ways to improve working conditions (e.g., office space), pay, and opportunities for professional connection for adjuncts. ECC is certainly not doing any worse than other comparable colleges, but there is room for improvement.

I have been working at Elgin Community College full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good hours, good benefits like vacation, extra college-breaks, childcare, challenging work in most areas, lots of good intentions, it is fun being involved in the education of young people and returning adult learners. Physical work environment is very nice. Technology is reliable and fairly modern. Focused on diversity. Faculty, Staff and Administration are all student focused most of the time.

    Cons

Hiring process is painful. Onboarding process doesn't always include the training you might need. Some departments are overstaffed...some are understaffed. This can be a very political place so you do have to watch out for the climbers. Leadership doesn't often recognize the contributors versus the talkers and can act without facts at times. Definition of diversity is narrow during the hiring process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve hiring. Improve training for new staff. Always start with the basic assumption that people are good...get facts, consider motives, and be fair. I've see a few "Salem Witch" hunts. Seek out input from the more quiet souls. Learn to recognize those who truly contribute and those who just make a lot of noise.
