Corporate politics and corruption, cover-ups and all the problems that go along with a big company

I worked at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Solid reputation
Huge force in Indianapolis, well respected in the city
    Foundation is incredibly powerful

    Cons

Corporate bureaucracy and politics was tough
Very insular, difficulty in partnering and working well with others
Only real large corporation in a "one-horse" town, so they have an inflated view of themselves
HR department is a concern, some HR reps went back into regular business jobs and ended up managing people who they had worked with on very private and challenging matters
Most of the good people left the organization a LONG time ago so they are left with many middle and upper managers who quite frankly aren't the cream of the crop....
For the most part the senior leadership have been promoted from within, so there is no diversity in thought at the top

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in some diversity from outside the company

I worked at Eli Lilly as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Clean environment, management was always pretty good, although if there is a conflict between a contractor and an employee, it's the contractor's fault automatically.

    Cons

Contractor's are treated as second rate citizens. They have to park far away and often walk past a lot of empty parking spaces that will be empty all day, but are reserved for employees.

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities to perform different jobs ever 2-3 years, good benefits, US HQ is in Indianapolis

    Cons

Management only cares about promoting themselves, many, many professional networkers that just have meetings with others to try to get promoted. No meaningful leadership or supervisor training means you most likely will get someone that has no idea how to lead people, very large discrepancy between associate level pay and management, for some reason they keep approving larger bonuses for themselves every time there is a benchmarking, kind of a joke

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people like adults and TRAIN your leaders

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work/family balance is good, base pays are solid and bonus pay can be amazing when the company is performing well. Promote from within mostly. Little conservative but striving to break out.

    Cons

Politics can drive most promotions. Need to manage pipeline better. Sometimes a bit passive/aggressive culture. Silo by business unit and not much cross fertilization of people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get HR involved in promotions again, otherwise it's completely political in nature and we are not always doing the right thing by people and respect. Need more corporate based position that can work remote a few days a week.

I worked at Eli Lilly full-time

    Pros

Lilly has great benefits and they treat their employees well. They are working hard to communicate.

    Cons

Pipeline is not producing and they have lost patents on several products leading to decreased revenue. Touch place to be right now because of that. There are patches of "reallocation" (another term for lay offs) that you don't hear about unless you know someone that got reallocated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep communicating...

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are good for a midwestern city. CEO being a scientist has a very research minded approach.

    Cons

Very conservative company when it comes to R&D. Very much 'wait and see' approach to other biotech and pharma.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be a leader in innovation.

    Pros

Very collaborative, not much pressure, development opportunities are plentiful

    Cons

Slow moving corporate ladder and concentrated decision making power within a few in senior management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your middle management more and allow the corporate culture to flourish

I worked at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of smart though often arrogant people, good salaries. Lavish parking lots, cafeterias. Great legacy as a company of moral integrity.

    Cons

Not really about the patient or the employee anymore. What used to be an Indy treasure is now just another corporation. People stacked in open offices like sardines doing the bidding of Wall Street and the FDA. Expect this company to remain stagnant at best. Marginal benifits, bonuses and pay increases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pleasing the interest groups, hire people of integrity, Invest in people, cut bureaucracy and politics.

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Paid every two weeks. Benefits are better than average

    Cons

Lack of promotion; lilly culture is one minded; they ask to take what you find here and make it better and better, but it doesn't work that way. Prior work experience doesn't count worth much

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to surveys as a group instead of a whole company discrepancies abound across various departments consistency in managers is not a priority.

It's a good place to work if you are an employee, not so much as a contractor.

I have been working at Eli Lilly as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Eli Lilly is a large company with many jobs. They try to keep employees on even if various sections of the company close.

    Cons

If you are a contractor you are not treated as well as employees. You have to park in a separate area and there are no provisions for disabled parking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the treatment given to contractors, since there are so many of them in your company.
