I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, good people, great culture considering the size of the organization. It has a small town vibe despite being large. Respect for People core value and I have to say most of the people I have interacted with are pretty true to this thought process. Very ethical in interactions with customers. Take the high road approach.

    Cons

Upper Management never staying the course long enough to see decisions through before deciding change the direction. Trenches are solid in trying to implement but consistent change impacts performance due to direction and priorities always shifting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay the course and if upper management has a bad track record of poor performance do something about it.

    I worked at Eli Lilly

    Pros

Lots of great people working there and a decent place to get started in your career. Some truly innovative thinking in some parts of the organization.

    Cons

One of the most passive aggressive/political environments I've ever worked in. Everyone is always "nice" and confrontation is frowned upon. This leads to lots of pre-meetings, revisiting of decisions, waffling. Many areas of R&D which were once excellent have suffered from lack of investment and are now declining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

R&D management is really screwed up, as shown in the annual employee surveys where the trust/transparency questions always score well below the rest of the company. While we often heard about being a research driven business, apparently that was based on external research for molecule acquisitions, since we can't seem to get any internal small molecules approved.

I have been working at Eli Lilly

    Pros

Great people to work with. Good respect for people. Wonderful benefits: health, time-off, etc.

    Cons

The company is coming through a tough period with patent expirations - during this time there isn't much upward mobility. Two out of the last 3 years the company has not provided raises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue on the path you've set - with new drug approvals Eli Lilly should once again becoming a thriving company.

I have been working at Eli Lilly as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

It can be an exciting place to work; they develop you; they enable work-life balance.

    Cons

As in any pharma company, it's a highly regulated environment, which can feel constraining. While they keep you focused on your job, you will have to fight to show the value you can add.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management could take steps to ensure lower management is align with its vision.

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The work that you do will matter. No matter what task you do; it will be important. Taking your role serious is a MUST!
Great company overall; especially for women, minorities, those that have an alternative lifestyle, and people less that 40ish.

    Cons

Lots of A++++ personalities to deal with.
Seems as if the company as a whole is a little prejudice towards the aging work force.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Never ever do buy out packages. When the need to reduce head count is needed; let attrition run its course. The buy outs have created the unintended consequence of some people sticking around longer than they should just waiting for an early buy out program.
