I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and pay especially when compared to similar positions at other companies. You're not expected to stay late or work more than 40 hrs/week (although that is probably more specific to the QC lab positions).

    Cons

Culture is not very good for fresh grads. Pretty conservative and you'll be one of few people under the age of 30. Work can be draining because it's monotonous and unchallenging. Even if you question why something is done a certain way, it might not be open for discussion because of all the bureaucratic hoops you need to jump through to get something changed. I think many of my chief complaints only apply to QC so I wouldn't take my negative opinions too seriously if you're in a different role though.

    Advice to Management

Management is very nice but I don't see them actually doing anything to help individuals advance their careers. It seems like if an opportunity arises, a candidate has already been picked far in advance and likely has 10+ years experience at Lilly.

    Pros

Nice city (Indianapolis), good benefits, consistent and fair, offered optional period of leave during career if desired for family reasons (with protection of job level on return), matching 401k, treats employees very well, even in the most economically challenging times

    Cons

Parking was a challenge and added 20 minutes each way during the commute. Some areas are stagnant. The constant trainings on being an honest, ethical, non-discriminatory, fair employee were sometimes too much; however, when I left, I appreciated the level of ethics that Lilly held all employees to. There was no doing anything that could even remotely be seen as unethical, and now after departing Lilly, I realize more and more how rare it is.

    Advice to Management

Continue to reinforce fairness and to ensure that both physician and non-physician leadership have equal voices. Hang in there! Bring Lilly values with you where ever else you may go.

    Pros

I started at Imclone, which had been purchased by Lilly. Imclone was a great company, efficient, good assets, friendly, reasonable

    Cons

After Lilly took over, the incredible bureaucracy came with it. Endless committee meetings, layer after layer. Worse, management cannot be trusted. People were laid off despite explicit promises. Lilly culture is like not other. They are isolated in Indianapolis, it is a club, career and progress is determined how one fits into the club.

    Advice to Management

Bring leadership for all functions from the outside. Move company headquarters to Boston or NJ.

    Pros

Being a pharmaceutical sales specialist was a very rewarding position. I enjoyed meeting with thought leaders in medicine, working and talking with physicians and ultimately providing information/prodcuts that could positively impact and person's well-being.

    Cons

Pharmaceutical sales is difficult. It is not like any other sales position. There is no signed contract per se. Instead you are building relationships and expecting that the information you deliver creates interest and adoption of your product.

    Advice to Management

Consider hiring extremely talented and motivated undergraduates as sales representatives. I am not certain MBAs and business experience account for that much further personal growth.

    Pros

Best training for sales and segmentation!

    Cons

New managers are trained to manage. They are usually people who have excelled at sales only.

    Advice to Management

Experience outside of Lilly isn't recognized or acknowledged. If you didn't do it at Lilly, your previous work experiences have no value.
