I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

cost of living is cheap, benefits are great.

    Cons

lots of bureaucracy, benefits being eliminated, and really hard to move unless you are part of the chosen MQ2020 few, or part of the Irish mafia. They are currently ratcheting up the pain to see if they can get people to leave on their own, so they don't have to pay any severance. Local management has many tools to positively recognize people at no cost to them and the department, however they are either too lazy or too busy to make the effort. It is amazing what person would do for you if they were positively recognized on a regular basis. Because the cost of living is so low in Indiana, there is a huge impediment to leave the company, as no where else will you make this much and pay this little for housing in the pharma industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management routinely ignores their own systems (GQS/ CQP) when it is convenient for them, this will eventually be the downfall of the company. It is especially discouraging when your local management knows nothing about the area/ product and are only there for the rotation thru the area. Its obvious that the managers that have come thru in that situation do not care about the people working for them, and that they are only solely focused on their next move.

I worked at Eli Lilly (more than an year)

    Pros

It's been around forever. Family feel. Great diabetes pipeline.

    Cons

Lots of changes going on in pharma. Last year they laid off a huge percentage of the sales force and the attrition rates since then have been pretty bad.

    Pros

Incredible pay, chance at a full time offer of you perform well, awesome chances to network and really see the company, incredible people, and a company that truly cares about it's employees

    Cons

High expectation, so you better be willing to work, but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Coming out of a postdoc Lilly provides great opportunities to grow, learn drug discovery, and still have some opportunity for basic research. They also treat their employees like family and consider them the most important asset. Lastly, the CEO is a scientist, which fosters an environment of faith that the company will be led in the right direction.

    Cons

Not the best pay compared to local competitors, but it is offset somewhat by other benefits. It seems unlikely that someone starting there career at Lilly will be able to achieve career goals without having to move out of the company.

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The compensation is highly competitive, the products we sell change Lives, the people that work there do care for one another. Long standing career

    Cons

People are pre-defined in a career path fairly early on in one's career. "You are Placed", the structure is complex which makes decision making slow, political, and bureaucratic at a time the company needs innovation and speed. This structure is also highly expensive at a time that operating expenses are very tight with the loss of 3 product to patent expiration the past 3 years. Promotions are done for the wrong reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the organizational structure having 10 Vice Presidents in the US Affiliate is why we make slow decisions, inconsistent decisions, and do not have a common culture. Also, put in place and Chief Operating Office and drop 5 of the VPs. We continue to discuss cost savings options, yet of all the leaders non-have deep operational experience. Finally, stop trying to make the Sales Force "Happy" this is like feed a kid sugar it is un-healthly for all.

I worked at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Global company that makes high quality products that improves peoples lives. Good mobility if willing to work in Indianapolis. Also provides good advancement for individuals wanting to remain in sales. The benefits are good, particularly vacation but like many companies the benefits continue to diminish. Good base salary pay for new sales representatives and those in 3-6 years.

    Cons

Company has difficulty getting new medications approved by FDA, always seem to be behind competition. Field sales representatives have to launch 3rd to market products making it difficult for successful launch. Bonus structure/compensation constantly changes every 2 years. Traditionally bonus structure less than competition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on trying to stabilize sales force as it remains fluid and causes employee unrest. Quit promoting managers that are ineffective to higher salary positions. Live the core values of the company.

I have been working at Eli Lilly full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people, communal atmosphere, solid history, great benefits, 401 K matching, growing pipeline, one of the few companies that currently still have a pension. Lilly also has done layoffs humanely and have treated employees very well during the process, which is commendable.

    Cons

Very political, bonuses are subjective based on what your manager decides to give, commission is now based less on your sales, it's not the place to make a lot of money like it was years ago. Quotas seem to be out of reach and with the way healthcare has changed, there's only so much you can do to attain success. Promotions are decided by Directors, who are very out of touch with who deserves said promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions need to be given more often to those who deserve it, otherwise good people will look elsewhere. Pay seems to be much less than competition and sales professionals need a reason to stay.

    Cons
