Pros
Good enviroment right now because of the labour shortage. Good opportunity right now to look for promotion. Good time to get extra training such as mine rescue or a supervisor's ticket. Good time for apprenticeships and movement within the company. The area is known for outdoor fun. Close by there is fishing, hunting, hiking and golfing. People ride their snowmobiles and trail bikes to the gas station and then out of town in Elkford. Ski hills at Elkford, Sparwood and the Pass with a world class ski hill at Fernie. Close by shopping at Calgary, Lethbridge and Cranbrook. Can be bussed right from Elkford or Sparwood to the five mines. Tons of overtime at the present.
Cons
What happens when there is no labour shortage? The morale used to be rock bottom with Fording Coal having 12 percent of the arbitrations in BC at less than a thousand people. Both Elkview and Greenhills were closed long enough to eject their unions when their company went bankcrupt due to the So-Creds policy of buying High and selling Low. After Fording started Greenhills there was alot of unrest. Coal Mountain was closed as well and Line Creek was happy until being bought by Fording as a whole lot of them were "let go". Most things are still quite disorganized. What happens when the overtime dries up and people are financially geared to making the extra money?
Advice to Senior Management
Act as if there is a labour shortage after it ends and morale will jump.
