I have been working at Ellington Management Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Open, friendly environment
    - Smart people
    - Plenty of opportunities to advance
    - The CEO is always looking for new business opportunities to help the firm grow
    - Low turnover

I really love working at Ellington primarily because of the people. I would call most of my co-workers friends, and am comfortable in my own skin at the office. Ellington has more of a family feel, but at the same time people work hard and get things done.

The best way to succeed at Ellington is to work hard, proactively seek out ways to help others, and keep the best interests of the firm in mind. That means taking time out of your day to help others if they need it, even if it doesn't immediately benefit you. If you do that, the management will recognize your efforts and ambition and give you opportunities to advance. If you don't, it will be harder to succeed, but the upside is that there are always so many new things going on, you don't have to worry much about competing with others for new opportunities to add value.

    Cons

    - Meetings often start late.
    - Tech support needs more people and could often be more responsive. They have been using the same phones since the 90s.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - More actively recruit top talent
    - Find replacements for incompetent people
    - Start meetings on time

I worked at Ellington Management Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lunch paid for everyday (to keep you at your desk). Good Medical/Dental benefits.

    Cons

Underpays for talent claiming that layoffs are rare. Untrue. Be careful to negotiate well. Lackluster bonus and no salary increase many years in a row, claiming liquidity problems and "next year will be better" mentality, yet reneges every year end.

401k contribution non-existent for many years now claiming they only "profit match".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay for top talent and give incentive to stay

    A pretty terrible experience.

I worked at Ellington Management Group as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

It's a pretty laid back environment with some nice perks like free lunch everyday, but even that gets old fast.

    Cons

They are very zoned into their own worlds. The employees are not very sociable. The structure of their internship program is terrible on many levels. You learn nothing and essentially do the most nonsensical "busy" work all day long. They had zero plans for interns and essentially took them on for no good reasons at all leaving us all with pointless tasks.

I worked at Ellington Management Group full-time

    Pros

    1. The company provides catered lunches (there are no restaurants within a large radius from the office)
    2. Suburban location (if you hate NYC)
    3. Annual holiday party

    Cons

You will do great at Ellington, if you fall into one of the following categories: (i) a relative of the founder, (ii) a college friend of the founder, (iii) a former colleague of the founder from Kidder Peabody. Everybody else is gun fodder. The corporate culture is a continuation of the defunct IB Kidder Peabody where the founder worked as a mortgage trader.
