I have been working at EmblemHealth

    Pros

    Telecommuting is offered as an incentive;

    Cons

After expanding telecommuting to job titles other than Nurses and IT staff, telecommuting was yanked from all other positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that when you "appear" to move in one direction, only to suddenly change your mind - that it has a very negative affect of staff.

Yanking telecommuting is the latest example.

Current Employee - RN Inpatient Care Manager in New York, NY

I have been working at EmblemHealth full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Location was convenient and telecommuting was allowed.

    Cons

LPN was allowed to supervise RN which is against the Nurse Practice Act. RN's hold the higher rank and LPN should never be in supervisory position with RN staff reporting to her. Salary was extremely low compared to similar companies in the same location. Benefits were only fair; not great. Large numbers of staff resigning on continuous basis leaving larger assignments for those left behind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase salary to competitive level. Do not allow LPN with vocational school education to supervise and evaluate RN's who hold Bachelors and Masters degrees.

    Pros

Pros are the benefit package--very comprehensive. I enjoy that new employees begin with 23 PTO days (vacation/sick/personal) each year (prorated). Colleagues tend to be friendly depending on the work area. Those who bring their "B" game to work can easily succeed.

    Cons

Leadership lacks in terms of long-term planning and communicating effectively. This results in duplicating work often and quickly changing priorities, which is quite frustrating.

In this environment, leadership will often throw employees under the bus when goals are not met or items were overlooked.

Depending on department, personal and professional growth is limited. Because of this, there is a large amount of turnover. I believe that many of the newer employees are quite competent, yet, because most are new problems can arise. Of the crowd that has worked here for 5+ years, most seem stuck in their ways or lazy (because they can get away with it). Though there are a handful of older employees that seek to further their work, the attitude of long-term employees and the lack of training and integration for new employees does not allow for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to employee needs, recognize accomplishments, set a directions, create opportunities/positions/programs that will contribute to growth.

I worked at EmblemHealth full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Work hours - 9 to 5
    Good work/life balance
    On site gym
    Pretty good benefits

    Cons

    ZERO corporate culture
Bad management - no vision for company's future
    Blaming employees for everything
Extremely high Turnover - the company is basically a revolving door

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just because things are going well doesn't mean that you throw your employees under the bus. The ACA (aka "Obamacare") has changed the healthcare industry. And now the health insurers can't profit like they used to. But a company shouldn't fault its employees for that. And that's exactly what's going on at EmblemHealth. Instead of building a new direction that involves all shareholders - including customers, vendors, management and employees - management has basically decided that the downturn of the company is the employees fault. The culture now at EmblemHealth is every man for himself. Even if you go to your manager for help, the problem will be automatically considered your fault and you'll be penalized for it. Its disgusting. And the culture has suffered tremendously. No one works with each other. Arguments and attitude are rampant. People are now leaving - either being layed off, early retirement or just finding something better. This is not a company you want to work for.

    Toxic Enviornment

I worked at EmblemHealth full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Was once a good organization to work for.

    Cons

Toxic enviornment, employees need to be very careful as you "will" be thrown under bus at every oppertunity. Many executives will not take responsibility and normal reaction is to deflect responsibilites. Blame game is rampant and starts with CEO. CEO has been with failing company for 40+ years and needs to completely step aside along with most other sr executives who play the numbers game to look good. Espically Operations and IT two critical areas where million of dollars are invested and wasted, if there were ever an externial audit both areas would have new leadership quite quickly. A public complany would never tolareate what goes on here. Someone else mentioned it's a "bullying enviornment" - they hit the nail on the head!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executives need better leadership skills, not just the pep talks that only happen once every 2-3 years.

I have been working at EmblemHealth full-time

    Pros

    It's a paycheck.

There are some very decent people working here, who try very hard to do the right thing.

    Cons

Stress filled environment has declined dramatically since year or so before Anthony Watson left organization.
Job review system is useless and arbitrary, discouraging risk taking/creativity and encouraging lots of C.Y.A. and "it's not my job" thinking.
Medical benefits are a poor value for the cost and are a poor quality.
IT systems are badly integrated, cumbersome and make everything significantly harder than it should be.
    Lacks quality focus.
    Ridiculous personalities and politics.
Employees constantly pressured to produce but not given authority or tools to do so.
    No Raise or Bonus.
    Too many very unhappy employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Can't say for certain, but; I have doubt about whether the "good" reviews on this site are genuine.
There are many intelligent hard working employees who really want to do great work... the organization stops it.

I have been working at EmblemHealth full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I have been working at Emblemhealth since few years. Benefits are reasonable; PTOs are 23 and reasonable. Medical Insurance can be better as they are Insurance provider. Remote working is allowed which provides work-life balance. Policy varies from manager to manager.

    Cons

Upper Management is very unorganized, especially IT. Shows no respect to staff. Laying off people without careful consideration of knowledge transfer. In this environment, leadership will often throw employees under the bus when goals are not met or items were overlooked. There is no professional growth at all. To grow in this environment, one should have close relationship with upper management. Bell Curve throws employee under the bus. Bonus is paid based on rating, so to save bonus, employees are getting lower rating. No loyalty to the hard working intelligent people who has experience. Senior Leadership needs to respect the professional staff who allows them to march forward!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build relationship with employees; they are closer to you and will help to spread good words. Remove Bell Curve. Trust employees without any bias, and remove toxic environment. People are now leaving - either being layed off, early retirement or just finding something better. Executives leave in 2-3 years or are forced to leave. Some people are there since 15+ yrs; it good if they share knowledge, but they do not think out of box, so new ideas are not accepted. Small pond with lot of fishes and some managers are waiting to swallow them.

    Pros

    Talented, hard-working and dedicated employees.

    Cons

Total lack of executive leadership. Communication from leadership to employees is non-existent. Leadership does a lot of talking and planning but can never execute. Reactionary project planning.
    Company allows "bully" management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to change certain senior leadership and hire outside leadership from other healthcare insurance providers that have vision.

    Pros

Employees are hard working and pleasurable. They put up with a lot of crap from management.

    Cons

Management and low pay. Management gets the big bonuses and the employees get no reward and are reminded constantly "be glad you have a job".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Before decisions are made, run it by the employees who actually do the work. Management has no idea how things are done and only care about numbers.
