    The "new" Engineering Department

    Product Development Engineer (Former Employee)

ProsEmbraer makes high quality aircraft and is a good company overall. Melbourne manufacturing plant is well organized and appears to be a good place to work.

ConsPeople blaming problems on it being a start up company (meaning Eng department). Lack of processes, leadership, and teamwork. Not organized.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some experts. Give people the tools they need to do their jobs.

Education and experience is frowned upon.

Product Development Engineer (Former Employee) Melbourne, FL

ProsBetter than unemployment, maybe. There are some good people there. Free coffee. The Brazilians are great. Benefits are great for single people.

ConsAutomotive industry taking over. Boys club, buddy system in full force at this place. Highly discriminating environment. The less education and less experience you have the farther you will go here. They do not want you to see job titles, and will not give you job descriptions. Very hush hush to cover up how they treat people that have experience or education. Manager is trying to push out Brazil and take over with automotive industry. IT (I. T.) is a joke. No established HR department. You simply can not trust anyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire your hiring manager before losing the rest of your valuable employees.

    over hyped, under delivered

    (Former Employee) Melbourne, FL

Prosexciting projects involving new technology, celebrated diversity of national and cultural backgrounds in office

Consobserved gender discrimination against women. lack of accountability in leadership toward their teams. futile ethics violations reporting process. observed favoritism and hiring of personal friends and family members (nepotism). observed anger management issues amoung managers (yelling, cursing at employees). lack of hourly pay (this amounts to unpaid overtime in salaried positions). observed under-paying of qualified new employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove your ethics violations reporting process - observed lack of confidentiality caused several employees to suffer retaliation and alienation. This would resolve many of the other problems if fixed.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great job experience, but with amateur managers and directors.

Flight Test Engineer (Former Employee) São José dos Campos, São Paulo (Brazil)

ProsFor the engineers, the activity of aircraft development is great!

ConsAs you get more experienced, there is the risk of taking charge of bureaucratic tasks, and the real engineering pleasure is forgotten.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf someone is very good technically, maintain him/her in the same position. Do not throw administrative tasks onto someone who may not like it.

    Not stimulating as I imagined...

Product Development Engineer (Current Employee) São José dos Campos, São Paulo (Brazil)

Pros- Well balanced personal and professional life
    - Several benefits, like healthcare insurance, dental plan, good 401k, etc
    - Good salary for the starting position, although it will rapidly stall for many

    Cons- Few growth opportunities
    - To rigid structure, new employees are incapable of taking any decisions, and sometimes I few like I am not contributing
    - Very repetitive work

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have to start concerning how you will attain younger employees that have a completely different expectation and plans for their careers.

Bad company culture outweighs many of its benefits

    (Current Employee)

ProsThe starting salaries are higher than average in Brazil, but not the highest. The standard hours are long, but you hardly ever need to work overtime, except if you are in customer support or during certification campaigns; you work with far less pressure to deliver than you would in most industries. The location, São José dos Campos, is not the best in Brazil, but there is a lot worse, São Paulo for example. There is plenty of opportunity for employee training, ranging from very good to very poor quality.

ConsTo some degree, the cons at Embraer are true of all big companies and aircraft manufacturers; however, there is a certain local flavor which manifests from time to time: Although there has been some effort to reform, Embraer has a very byzantine management style, and ends-up leaving too much power in the hand of individuals at all levels. The company is still haunted by its state-owned past with many 'do nothing' managers and what seems to be entire 'do nothing' departments; I know many high payed employees who seem to be just waiting for retirement. Merit-based promotions exist, but are rare; cronyism is very visible. Human resources is unimaginative and extremely aggressive. Middle management is often clueless, absent and seemingly disinterested about anything relevant to their function. At Embraer you will find yourself having to re-explain the basics countless times to decision makers and self-appointed 'experts', who in spite of knowing everything, can't remember anything or walk and chew gum at the same time. Engineers here have an almost occult bond to procedure, and are very touchy concerning any unflattering questions about their methods. Any honest comment can make you a target of KGB-style intimidation for no apparent reason at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire people who have worked in industries other than the aircraft industry. Hire people from outside your traditional talent pool (ITA, USP, UFMG schools). Scout foreign workers and hire them in permanent contracts and into leadership positions, not only as temporary consultants. The policy of only promoting leadership from within Embraer promotes cronyism and leads to a monoculture of ideas. Diversify your pool of top experts and improve your middle management, they are overpaid and underperformant by any industry standard. Lastly, fire those who do nothing or who stand in the way of progress starting with 'experts' and middle management.

Very smart workers and many self-interested leaders

Product Development Engineer (Current Employee) São José dos Campos, São Paulo (Brazil)

Pros-Most brilliant people to know and work with
    -Great medical care
    -Top of engineering in brazil

Cons-Middle management will treat you like fool.
-You have always the last sentence in any discution with management: yes sir!
-Lack of promotion after 4-5 years.
-The offices have bad ergonomy, bad lights, noise.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpeak the truth sometimes. You cannot outsmart all the smart people you have all the time.

    Engineer in Brazil

Product Development Engineer (Current Employee) São José dos Campos, São Paulo (Brazil)

ProsBig company and brand name, respected in the aerospace world. Its salary level is high compared to other companies in Brazil. As an engineer you will work with state of the art technology.

ConsNot people focused and lack of internal mobility. As an engineer you are not encouraged to learn or do more than pure engineering. Its sales teams outside Brazil are weak and don't hire locally preferring to transfer people from Brazil who have no idea of the culture of the place they are going.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome a modern people focused company.

Good company as first job, but very low career opportunities. Technical capability is not rewarded.

Product Development Engineer (Current Employee) São José dos Campos, São Paulo (Brazil)

    ProsTechinical Challenge
Patriotism as the most technological prone company in Brazil.

    ConsVery weak middle management.
    Low carreer oportunities
    Technical capabilities not rewarded
    Slow salary progression

Advice to Senior ManagementReward technical carreer.
Recover the engineering prone company that it was years ago.
