Pros
Truly multinational, market leader and growth oriented company to work for.
Cons
Too many people and too big organization.
Pros
A stable job if you take all heat and be happy with the compensation.
Cons
No career growth for however long you work.
Pros
Emerson has very rigorous processes that have been honed over 20+ years, and learning these as part of leading a team has been a great career improvement. They know how to manage a large company efficiently, and they acknowledge that they are learning how to stimulate growth and they are trying to get better at it.
You get all of the benefits of a large company, and if you are a hard worker, they take care of you - it's just not in the timeline that many people would like. Career progression at Emerson needs to be looked at in terms of decades - not years. The difference between Emerson and smaller firms where the career progression may be faster is that you can rest assured that Emerson will be there decades from now, and you aren't so sure that these smaller, fast progressing companies will be.
Cons
There are the typical large corporation issues that you have to deal with. The most frustrating of which for me is how difficult it has been to get rid of a low performer. The company is very litigious in its approach to eliminating poor employees, and that culture makes it incredibly painful for the division management. As a result, many managers simply don't try to do it, and low performers are allowed to stay for a long period of time, which not only brings down overall performance, but morale as well.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop living in fear of being sued for eliminating the low performer. Adopt the GE policy of forcing out the bottom 10% periodically. The best thing that happened to the company was the economic downturn that came a couple of years ago where it made it easier to get rid of some of the folks that were dragging us down.
Pros
valuable training; great people; fun environment
Cons
lack of career advancement opportunities for some divisions
Pros
Low risk environment; also translates into low innovation quotient.
Cons
You get promoted (and get anything beyond inflation adjustment) mostly by being there long enough. Outside and new blood only comes in when an acquisition occurs.
Advice to Senior Management
As the world gets flatter, Emerson will be better off with more performance based compensation. The current stats (especially at divisions) will show you an almost 1-1 correlation of compensation to seniority. I also belive that for long Emerson traded stability for compensation - the mid-management is begining to fill up with mediocrity. This has served the operational philosophy well for decades but may prove costly over the next few.
Pros
Emerson is a good company with a great brand value worldwide. Good benefits package and great employer-employee relationships.
Cons
Compensated less and there is little or no guidance from peers at certain times. Needs to up its identity with Gen Y if it wants to stay relevant.
Advice to Senior Management
It helps to attract the young rather than old / senior level management to fill some job vacancies.
Pros
All the tools you need to succeed are provided for you. Even though training in may take a long time, management sticks with you and gives feedback a long the way.
Cons
It is a large company. It can take awhile to get to know even the immediate people you are working with.
Advice to Senior Management
I am not sure how management gets anything done with 30-35 hours of meetings per week. They seem as though they could benefit with more time to actually get things done.
Pros
If you have nowhere else you can draw a paycheck, work at Emerson.
Cons
My manager was totally incompetent.
Advice to Senior Management
Quit, and go back to school to learn the art of how to treat employees.
Pros
good company to work for frsher
ample optotunities for onsite
Cons
not so good for sofware professional
no process documents followed properly
Advice to Senior Management
impement formal process for each activity
Pros
Large company
Opportunity to advance if you are willing to move to MO
Ability to travel if you wish
Cons
Divisions do not carry "larger company" mentality and tend to be "good old boys" network.
Poor vacation time offerings
Limited healthcare insurance options
Sites run largely independently and seem "less than corporate" sometimes
Advice to Senior Management
Watch what is going on at sites within the divisions, have high-potential "summits" once a year to bring together young talent to build interest in the larger company as a whole.
