I have been working at Emerson Industrial Automation

    Pros

The best part of working here is the level of training available on a corporate level. It is a pleasant environment to work in.

    Cons

Some of the cops to working here include the usual. Some silos are hats to break down. The pay can always be better and so on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good place to work. We need to work with other entities under the Emerson umbrella.

    Pros

There are no pros to speak of.

    Cons

A hostile work environment where employees work in fear. Infighting and tension between employees and managers is the norm. ASCO built a great class leading company years ago but now management is only focused on their own paycheck and always point the finger of blame down to employees.

Salaries are below market, and requirements for promotion change with every annual review.

HR is put in place exclusively to enforce management orders and protect the company from lawsuits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put on your big boy pants and turn this company around. Listen to your employees concerns without punishing them.

I worked at Emerson Industrial Automation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Bonus program for patents and referrals. Pension is offered.

    Cons

Management consistently plays favorites. Pay is much less than industry average and raises are never more than cost of living increases. The area is very expensive to live in. The most talented employees quit after 1 or 2 reviews. Long term employees have negative morale and are constantly venting to others. Engineering department has a hostile culture with ongoing disputes between department members.

Meetings feature testosterone filled shouting matches between departments and nobody cares if the project fails as long as it isn't "their fault". Projects drag on for years, because executives can't agree on anything. Approved vendors are chosen based on price which creates QC failures and extensive rework. This kills motivation across the board.

Real, effective training is non-existent. Employee appraisals contain lies while accomplishments are ignored. Promises of promotion are verbal and forgotten in written reviews. When employees complain to HR, they are treated like a troublemaker and reprimanded with an official write up which stays in the employees HR file.

Outsourcing is a big part of the Emerson culture.

Arrogant managers and supervisors are only interested in their own reputations and careers, never hesitating to sell out their own reports.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees are an asset, not a liability. Treat them that way.

I have been working at Emerson Industrial Automation

    Pros

    Benefits, pension, work-life balance, 401k.

    Cons

There is lots of bureaucracy. The size of the company makes it slow to implement change. High school culture is prevalent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to hire highly competent people at the base level of the business and be willing to pay accordingly. Eliminate about 3 layers of middle management. These two actions would reduce costs and create a highly efficient workforce.

I have been working at Emerson Industrial Automation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Dynamic environment. Lots of challenges. They talk a good game.
    Decent health benefits (not great)
    Decent salary (not great)
We strive for and achieve mediocrity.

    Cons

There are more #1 priority projects than you can count on two hands. How can you focus on that many things and succeed?

Employees are their number one asset - they place a high value on development and training. That's what they say but they fall short. If you're on the fast track life is grand. Most departments have little to know growth or development opportunities. There are no career tracks.

They openly admit they aim to be slightly below average salary wise. If you're looking for money they want you to look elsewhere. Your best raise will be the one when you get hired. They hire in fairly competitively but do not keep pace with raises. (Salaried - Can't speak to hourly/shift workers)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You talk about complexity reduction. Reduce your key initiatives. Focus on a few projects not all at once. Just because suit dreams it doesn't mean that we have the capacity to take it on right now.

I've been with the company for 17+ years. It has changed a lot and not all for the better. I believe in Emerson - Power Transmission Solutions (formerly EPT) has seen better days.

We need focus - not to follow every management fad. Perf(x) = a combination of every successful management tool. Kaizen, Lean, SixSigma, Toyota Mgmt... etc. We operate like an schizophrenic with ADHD that's been pounding RedBull. We're hyped up and easily distracted. Ask 50 people what our current goal is and they will all probably agree it is improving customer satisfaction. If you ask the same 50 people what we are doing to improve it - you'll get 50 different answers (Its not that everyone is doing their own piece to help solve the bigger issue. You've got everyone so scattered that no one is working in harmony. 50 oars all rowing to a different cadence.
