I worked at 1st Global full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Company supports and pays for professional training and licensing. Covered parking provided free of charge. Great staff. Some are allowed to work from home. Recognition Program for those that use it.

Cons

Management wants "Yes Men". No one wants to hear about the real, root issues. Company is fickle about who can say what. Image has become everything. Lots of politics and micromanagement. Appreciation of tenured staff has decreased in recent years.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Over the last few years the culture has changed and pushed human resources to the bottom. Recommend someone take notice of their turnover cost and encourage promotions beyond the typical kind of staff getting them.

    Pros

    Flexibility, fun work environment, people are nice

    Cons

    Cliquish- not in the right clique and your a target
    Also, very hard work for very low pay. They will always find a way to avoid giving a reasonable raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your people and give them an incentive to stay. Be fair and stop giving incentives (pay, bonuses and promotions) to friends of management and people who will report negative news about others to you. No one can be successful in that type of environment.

    I have been working at 1st Global

    Pros

    Great teamwork. Staff is very friendly and supportive. Furnished with the equipment required to perform the job. Relatively flat hierarchy.

    Cons

    Poor pay and no bonuses offered to staff below management. Micromanaging on most projects. All projects are urgent and you have multiple urgents on your task list at any one time. Hard to take time off because there are always time sensitive projects. Even when you get vacation or even bereavement you feel obligated to log in and check emails and handle issues. With the poor economy 1st Global froze all salaries and ceased the 401(k) match - they are still enforcing this policy. It is hard to watch the money they are throwing at our advisors and prospects to keep them happy when some staff are struggling to keep food on their tables. Get at most six jeans days per year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on your staff - they are the people who make you successful by implementing your promises to the advisors. Put their salaries on par with the industry. Stop thinking of the staff as downstreams - they are part of the team.
